Anyone has experience with World Net or HTS or niconico car rental in Hokkaido? Do I need to be able to speak or read Japanese for these car rental? Thx

I found several more with English reservation: Car Rental Hokkaido and Sky. Anyone has experience with these two? It seems they support English well.

Myself, rented cars via Rakuten JP & Jalan.net with

1) Times Car Rental ie Mazda (prompt English replies in Email, rents out ETC card & can buy NOC insurance on the spot).

2) Honda Rent a Car - rents out ETC card & can choose NOC insurance as an option when booking. However, no email contact. (some other Honda companies dont rent ETC card)

For the others, you may want to check if they rent out ETC card for Expressway travel (unless u dont mind paying cash) & if you can buy NOC insurance on the spot.

Thank you all :)

It's not my first time renting car in Japan, but I'm looking for cheaper option. Those companies I wrote is at the least 30% cheaper than the bigger companies. I don't buy extra insurance as I rent for >2 weeks and the insurance premium is half of the NOC charge :s13:

Anyone has experience with Sky or Car Rental Hokkaido?

Do they have the agreement documents in english? I guess that's the most important thing, the sta don't need to speak good english :s13:

How is your experience with them? Good car and service?

Thx thx

Ehhh they may have English documents, I'm not sure, cos I actually communicated with them in Japanese. Paiseh can't help you with that. But since they have an English webpage, I'm sure they must have SOME documentation in English at least.

Car is good and service is bagus. Had some water leaking out from back wheel near the end of the rental, panicked, emailed them, they reassured us it was just the air-con water and not that we damaged anything. So at the very least they're honest!

Their reply to enquiries usually quite quick. No harm just contact them and see how it goes.

And yes, their prices are more reasonable than the major car companies, but I guess is whether you willing to risk going with a company who may not have staff who speaks good English. YMMV!

Hi all!

Someone recommended me World Net car rental for Hokkaido, but the website seems like it doesn't have an english version. I tried to do some random search, pricing is quite cheap compared to the big boys. Any other similar alternative suitable for us?

Also, as i'm planning to travel for 11 days covering huge distances, what is the best and cheapest option to pay for tolls?

Thanks!

I have not used World Net before but you can book their cars thru Japanese sites like Jalan.net or Rakuten Travel JP.

You will get much cheaper pricing thru these aggregator sites compared to booking direct.

I book with Honda Rent from these aggregator sites. Honda is good. On recent booking, I was allowed to change return location (no charge) & extend rental period at normal rates.

In Hokkaido, there are many non-toll roads that are just as fast as Expressway (eg from Sapporo to Otaru). There are also many stretches of Toll-Free Expressway (eg from Asahikawa to Engaru).

I drove 1800km in Hokkaido covering Chitose - Toya - Niseko - Asahikawa - Yubetsu - Abashiri - Shiretoko - Akan - Obihiro - Sapporo.

I paid JPY 2430 in tolls. This was from Obihiro back to Sapporo, where using Expressway is recommended bcos non-toll road is much slower.

I just rent a ETC card from Honda Rent for JPY 540 to pay Toll fees - got 30% discount on toll if travel on Eway on Sundays & off-peak. No need the Hokkaido Eway Pass.

for you by travelling on non-expressway, does it make the journey more interesting (in term or scenery, etc) along the way although taking longer?

Generally true. There r more unique Michi No Eki to explore as well.
Non toll roads may not take much longer either (according to Google map).

The 2 Expressway I would recommend using are :

1) Doto Expressway if you are travelling between Sapporo/Chitose & Obihiro/Kushiro. The non-toll alternative (Route 274) takes much longer & has a lot of slow moving traffic (trucks, military).

To save further on toll cost without adding too much travel time, consider using the Oiwake 追分 Entry/Exit point of the Doto Eway (instead of using Eway all the way to/from Sapporo).

2) Asahikawa Monbetsu Toll-Free Eway from Asahikawa to Engaru (if u want to reach Yubetsu/Kitami/Abahiri fast). There are long sections going downhill so better for fuel consumption than the other direction. Traffic is light. Quite scenic. Not sure when they would start charging.
