Thought to share my experience. Instead of paying $100, I only paid $5 when I forgot to turn off data roaming when overseas.

Long story short, i went jb for a day trip. Happily whatsapp friends as i thought i was using esim. After breakfast, then i realised there were a few sms from Singtel notifying i reached my dataroam limit at $100. Some background, I am using Singtel postpaid plan and included Autoroam & pay as you roam add-on.

I was really shocked. Imagine starting the JB day trip with a $100 bill. I immediately contacted Singtel via the Singtel app chat function. After confirming that Singtel cant waive off the cost completely, the customer service suggested to buy the $5 Malaysia Dataroam in app the same day, the $100 charges will be absorbed automatically.

Indeed, when my monthly bill came in, I was only charged $5 instead of $100. Now i have unsubscribed Autoroam & pay as you roam add-on to prevent similar situation.

or just remember to disable roam in singtel app. don't like how they bundle autoroam + roam add on together (i.e u need to subscribe to autoroam before u could buy roam add-on)

Just do not roam on Singtel, their packaging and billing is ridiculous.

I tried to disable roaming via my phone setting but it also disallow me to use my esim/ overseas sim card. My friends using sim only plan Giga is safe from such accidental cost. They either buy the add on roaming or just buy esim.

yes phone setting will disallow roaming but still can't prevent SingTel readyroam from activating. there are activating charges for readyroam.

Can I just
- off the cellular data and
- off the data roaming on my phone, and
- switch on phone every 48hrs for a couple of mins
just to receive sms?

I read that sms sent by others during the time your phone is off or on airplane mode can still be received when you on the phone and off the airplane mode if they are sent in the last 48-72 hrs

Know the difference between roaming and data roaming.

Disable roaming means everything cannot receive. Cannot receive calls, cannot receive sms.

Enable roaming, disable data roaming, can receive calls and sms.

Just switch off your data network if you want to disable data.

Question: I'm quite new to Singtel Roaming. There are traps everywhere. I currenly subscribe to Pay as u roam and Auto-Subscribe ReadyRoam. I have turned off the data roaming from the app and my phone itself. I travel frequently to malaysia. If i only do Roaming, will it charge me, from just receiving sms. No Data Roaming.

Pay as u roam is the most basic component you must have in order to roam overseas. Without this, you can't even receive SMS in overseas.

If you turned off data roaming in mysingtel app, Auto-subscribe Ready Roam won't work. Neither also you will be incurred any charges for data roaming.

I'm Singtel user and goes to Malaysia often.
When I buy roaming, I will choose Neighbours 1GB $5
Once you used up 1GB, Singtel will give you another 1GB.
Exceed that you will need to pay. That's for about 28 days.

Once you reach Malaysia, turn on roaming, most likely you can have data already.
If you didn't buy roaming and don't have any roaming plan, once you reach Malaysia, you will have zero data, you can't receive any message.

If you exceed data or number of days, Singtel will any how charge. My wife overshoots half a day, Singtel bill her $500+. I call up and was reduce to $17.
