Hi, I understand that WhatsApp is not popular in China and not able to use it also. Is there a method which allow us to use WhatsApp in China? Thanks.

Nope, its being blocked and I don't know anyway to unblock it since the great firewall of China is able to detect and disconnect VPN connections.

Can access WhatsApp with non PRC SIM card. Meaning must use data roaming. Used it in January trip there.

Use PRC SIM card and WiFi will get blocked.

You can use either data roaming (Starhub Prepaid Sim card is a good choice for a short trip). I paid S$11 for 1GB 30days. It is S$8 for 1GB 7 days.

Or use a VPN. I am in China now and I find that free VPN like Turbo VPN and Seed4Me work fine.

Local China SIM and WiFi will have Google/Facebook/WhatsApp/YouTube/etc blocked.

Like other mentioned, use
1. VPN apps, some free for 7 days. After free trial, it get's difficult.
2. Data roaming, as long as foreign number roam in China, no issue on FB or Whatsapp. Just some rural area with poor connection then cannot get signal as easy as local sim card.

I believe Singtel, Starhub and M1 got overseas dataroaming services. Do check them out. This is the most hassle free way to get internet access with Instagram, google, twitter, youtube, facebook, etc blocked in China.

I was in Inner Mongolia and Bejing last December for vacation (damned cold!). I bought a data SIM card in Qoo10 for around $16. This SIM card gave me unlimited data (actually first 2GB in 4G speed, thereafter 3G) for 8 days. I was able to use Whatsapp, Google, etc.

You might want to consider this option.

the starhub prepaid 1GB $8 7 days (or $6/3 days) is quite a good deal.

i also use my malaysia digi prepaid kad (RM25/3 days/2GB + 30mins china calls) if I think i will be calling locally.

local china prepaid cards start from RMB19/mth on a prepaid basis

If u r using their WiFi. Then u use ur own VPN. Will FB , Google all be blocked?

With the right VPN, you can access FB and Google even if you use the local SIM data or local WiFi.

There are 10s of millions Chinese internet users who use VPN or similar applications (ShadowSocks) to access Google/YouTube/Facebook/Netflix/etc.

Ref for a quick read.
https://www.tipsforchina.com/mobile/vpn-faq.html

If you set up a simple OpenVPN server on your router, some say it works in China and some say it will soon not word as GFW is the best anti-VPN firewall in the world and is able to detect simple OpenVPN servers, the 2nd best is said to be Netflix.

This is also why it is more and more popular to use alternative solutions like ShadowSocksR server in China now.

More info for VPN is covered in the VPN thread.

Anyone knows how to set Singtel roaming to access google and whatsapp? My starhub prepaid roaming works flawlessly, but my friend's Singtel Post-paid service cannot access those blocked services. :s22:

I use singtel data roaming. No problems with WhatsApp and Google services. No configuration required.

Same here with SingTel postpaid plan last time when I tried with my company phone, no problem, no need configurations.

Now I do not have the company phone but I found usable free VPNs to be used in China in my Dec 2018 trip so that I used my Starhub prepaid data only for the first two days.
