HTPC laptop or desktop

I'll like to stream my movies from my PC(bedroom) to my 55 TV (living room). Thinking of getting a cheap laptop like stream11 or asus transformer t100 to remotely access my workgroup shared files in my PC to play on my 55 TV. Is this a good option or is building a HTPC rig better?

budget less than 500. thanks.
