Synopsis from movieweb.com:

Keller Dover is facing every parent's worst nightmare. His 6-year-old daughter and her young friend are missing, and as minutes turn to hours, panic sets in. The only lead is a dilapidated RV that had been parked on their street. Heading the investigation, Detective Loki arrests its driver, but a lack of evidence forces the only suspect's release. Knowing his child's life is at stake, the frantic Dover decides he has no choice but to take matters into his own hands. The desperate father will do whatever it takes to find the girls, but in doing so, may lose himself, begging the question: When do you cross the line between seeking justice and becoming a vigilante?

Prisoners comes to theaters September 20th, 2013 and stars Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal, Paul Dano, Maria Bello, Melissa Leo, Terrence Howard, Viola Davis, Jane McNeill. The film is directed by Denis Villeneuve.

Prisoners received an enthusiastic reception when it premiered at the Toronto Film Festival, with many touting Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal's performance and an emotionally arresting and suspenseful plot. Let's hope the Academy will not shy away due to the movie's dark subject matter.

Critics' Consensus (79% fresh rating at rottentomatoes.com):

A dark, grim police procedural, Prisoners isn't exactly feel-good cinema. However, critics say it's a suspenseful, gripping thriller, thanks to an outstanding ensemble cast and a mystery that remains ambiguous to the end. Keller Dover (Hugh Jackman) is the father of a six-year-old girl who goes missing, along with her best friend. A suspect is arrested, but released for lack of evidence; fearing the worst for his child, Dover decides to take the law into his own hands. The pundits say the Certified Fresh Prisoners is haunting, tense, and disturbing, with a weighty sense of moral complexity.

Very nice show.

Anyone know why the guy with maze necklace was dead ?

I think when he confessed to the Father that he killed 16 children, the Father tied him up and trapped him in the basement to prevent this devil from committing more evil.

But the Father must have felt guilt and sin for doing so and hence become a drunkard...

It has been a long time since we are being treated to such a well-crafted and riveting crime thriller like Prisoners, which deftly examines the limitations of humanity in the face of a threat. Perhaps it is due to the heavy subject matter and violence, Prisoners is totally devoid of humour but relishes on feelings of anguish, despair and anger as we see Hugh Jackman's Keller Dover takes law into his own hands while he searches frantically for his kidnapped daughter. We also witnessed the crumble of a family structure and the disintegration of humanity in a mere few days as the Dovers grapple with the tragedy. As such, Prisoners holds you by your throat and does not let go until the unexpected revelation and an almost perfect ending.

Hugh Jackman is in top form after receiving an Oscar nomination for last year's Les Miserables. Here, he is every bit as believable as the anguish father who resorts to breaking the law to find his daughter. The scene when he was shown photos of the victims' belongings by Jake Gyllenhaal's Detective Loki will surely bring tears to your eyes as you can almost feel his desperation and helplessness inside you. Jackman could be in for another nomination for his flawless performance. Another standout is Oscar winner Melissa Leo's low key performance as the caregiver of the suspect who harbours a secret that would be the key to finding the kidnapped girls. Also look out for director Denis Villeneuve, who made the equally excellent Incendies.

Prisoners will not be everyone's cup of tea but for those who appreciate a good piece of cinematic narrative, look no further than this thought-provoking and acclaimed movie!

Yea, totally agree! The movie was violent and disturbing in a very understated way. I really like how the line between the good and bad guys were blurred. A very thought inducing movie.

One of the best movies I watched this year ... PRISONERS

A bit slow to post, but I thought Prisoners was a very good film. Released about a month ago only, starring Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal.

Basically the film is about the tale of a father and a detective trying to find their missing daughter whom is supposedly kidnapped. The film is about 2.5 hours only, but it kept me at the edge of my seat throughout. Really enjoyed this very thrilling and intelligent film. Will highly recommend it. Probably one of the best movies I have watched this year to date.

Peace

Watched it last month. 8/10 from me. Kept me at the edge of my seat throughout the long 2.5 hour duration of the film. Very very thrilling.

Go for it!
