I also saved $45 bucks by not buying a new fan.

One day, I turned on my desktop fan to any speed and it spin very slow like something stuck inside.
I dismantle the desktop fan and the motor to clean the dirt.

I notice the oil on the bearings and parts are dried up causing huge friction and then I apply machine oil onto the parts.

Now it spin like a new fan.

I follow the video tutorial to dismantle the fan and motor btw ..

Not hard to dismantle.

Had a sense of satisfaction after following the video.

I wipe the internal parts of the motor clean and applied fresh oil.

The desktop fan now is very silent like newly bought.

Should WD40 first strip the hardened grease.

Then repack with proper grease, not oil.

Your fix probably won't last long since light oil won't stay on moving parts for long. When it finally fails, just clean up and use grease.

I can strip it again in the future.

Just that I do not have the WD40 when I am fixing it.

Looks like a fan really can last forever ..
The mechanism of motor is amazing

i tired to disassemble a defective fan before ... reach the motor that look like a 15 layer metal sandwich then cannot open it up , harvest the screws and throw it away

i like to use these cheapo $20 fan without the grill because the airflow is just nice and consumption 30 watt ..... problem is they don't last , have problem after 1.5 year
don't like those more powerful fan because too strong airflow

I read it is either the capacitor is weak and needs replacement or the oil inside have dried up causing the fan blades to stop spinning or spinning slow.

That is why I took a leap of faith and dismantle it and if cannot fix I buy new one.
Fixed it and saved a few bucks
