Reading about Thanatos reminds me of Piers Anthony book series called Incarnations of Immortality. There are 5 minor offices, Death, Time, Fate, War, Nature and 2 major offices Satan and God. These offices are actually filled by people. When they take on the role, they inherit the powers associated with that role, along with the accoutrements. E.g. Death will get the power to rip a soul from a person using his scythe. One of my favorite series. Would be great if they could make it into TV series.
