Hi guys

From what I've been reading online, most sites/articles state that games do not need the i7, that it's only used for 3D rendering, video editing etc. Apparently hyper threading even messes up games?

Is that still the case as of today's games? Are there any known games that cannot be fully supported by a high end i5?

Thanks

Just spend a bit more and get an i7. More future proof. Of course now i5 is sufficient. If you upgrade once every 2 years, then maybe get i5 will do. But if you upgrade like once every 4-5 years, an i7 will be more future proof.

Incoming high end AMD Zen chip already has 8 cores. With multi-threading, that's a total of 16 threads.

I'm currently using Intel i7-6700K.

Even virus scanning uses up all the 8 threads of the Intel chip.

i would say the test is kinda inconsistent...as in why he only use GTX 960 on i7 4790k

he already put it in the description
and if he use gtx 970 it is going to be higher in fps

* I didn't have all the rigs at my house at the same time that's why i could only use GTX 960 in i7 system (gaming is NOT a priority!). Had i used GTX 970 in all my tests i would have gone for high/1080p settings in all games to load the GPU a bit more ;)

well i just view it from hwz nv click on youtube.

Still would prefer if he could use the GTX970 and make all setting same (high/1080p) so that we can see some consistency and den we will be able to see the real performance differences.

i mean if really higher fps den so be it, so people will know that there is a huge differences. :o

Those graphs don't really offer clear CPU metrics since the sample GPUs used are all different:s11:

If you pick and choose the data, you can compare side by side those with the same GPU but different CPU.

But my concern is not with the current crops of DX12 games, but with future games within the next 4-5 years (I'm upgrading from Sandy Bridge to Skylake so my next upgrade will likely take that long).

DX12 opens up the possibility of games utilizing more CPU cores for better performances but whether game designers want to do so is up to them. The safe choice will be to get i7 over i5 for futureproofing since it was already shown presently that the bottleneck is above 4 cores with HT.

Question now is Intel Skylake vs AMD Zen which is even more impossible to predict since Zen will only be announced at the end of the year...
