Hi guys, I'm going for my ICT soon and was wondering how to handle the matter of the salary paid out during the period as I'm newly employed (full-time). I spoke to my HR but they aren't sure as well (I work for an SME). Should my employer pay my full salary and then make a claim to MINDEF or is it another procedure?

Every HR should know their firm's policy. If the HR does not knows, we would not know. There is 2 options still depending on HR.

1) HR will submit the make-up pay during your period of ICT or
2) You submit your own make-up pay with "proves" from HR of your pay and OT (if any over the last 6 months - based on what I remember)

A) Your firm will pay you ur regular salary and claim the period you are not with the firm while serving ICT from MINDEF

B) You will only get the partial salary (say 2 weeks that you work with your firm for that month) while MINDEF will then pay you the remaining 2 weeks).

At the end, you still get the same salary as if you do not have any ICT. Only advantage (based on my experience) is that should you need to do quite some OTs with your firm, you will still get the average OTs acrosss 6 months when you server your ICT.

I have MRed and my last ICT was somewhere back in Nov 2011 and my firm then submit for me the make-up pay.

Ask your HR to explore the "DIRECT" scheme with Mindef (www.ns.sg). With this, you go for your ICT as required, and your company pays your full salary with no deduction. Your company will claim from MINDEF any cost incured (your salary) while you are away. Your company needs to set this up and make the claims before you go for your ICT.

Really - if your HR does not know this, your company should hire more experienced HR professionals. (I am in HR BTW)

You can't be the only Singaporean guy there. What about other NSmen? Or is the HR staff new and too lazy to find out?

As what others have said, its either company pays you in full and they claim from MINDEF. Or company does not pay you for the duration of ICT and MINDEF pays you.
