If you have S$300,000 capital...

How would you invest that money?

Perhaps while maintaining a regular day job, though I might be jobless soon.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Update in 2018: Reaching 40. Was indeed jobless. HDB paid up. No outstanding loans.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Further Milestones:
2018 - 300k when retired
2021 - 1m
Early 2024 - 2m
Mid 2024 - 3m
End 2024 - 4m
Jun 2025 - 5m

Aug 2025 - 6m
Sep 2025 - 7m (Current) Link to GPGT

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Take note that though I started this thread in 2017 when the stocks were worth $300k, I started investing a lot earlier. I committed to purchasing the shares with 10% of my salary every month.

My total cost basis over approximately 8 years was probably a little more than S$50k.

To keep the dream alive. Many people are not living their ideal life, so need some hope to keep it going. Someday...... going to enjoy life!

Please throw away the ideals, live a full life now! Release the full potential. It's now or never. The answer is within. Just do it!

Just yield alone:

0-4% yield (lower risk) - local overseas savings/ fixed deposit, insurance savings plan/annuities, local property rental, CPF, SSB, SGB
4-9% - dividends from stock, overseas savings/fixed deposit, overseas property rental
9% or more - peer to peer lending, purpose built accommodation rental,stock/options trading

Seems like it's normally around these few options... higher risk higher returns... "safe" seems to means around max around 4% to me... any other places to safely park cash to generate high yield (>4%)?

Assuming u know nothing abt investing, have you identified what are your objectives with clear goals and time frames ?

do you know yourself well enough to invest ? are u easily shaken when there are price fluctuations in the market or have a plan to execute ?

there are many questions that can be asked that will raise even more questions.

asking for advice in this matter will have you inundated with advice from different perspectives.

bottomline, start askig yourself questions, challenge your assumptions, validate them. keep a journal to track your thoughts. investing is a life long journey.

Like yourself, i am also approaching 40, flat almost paid up. i started this journey 10 years ago and am still learning.

good luck

recently got a few posts from people claiming they got lots of cash or lots of property or lots of income and asking for advice. some also say their life very hard, people look down on their humble e-class.. i think this has created momentum as other rich people in this forum also realise that there are other rich people facing hardship so they feel ok about asking for advice too. certainly there may be some trolls but lets just assume they are genuine unless they start making trollish comments.

to TS i recommend putting 200k in standard chartered n getting priority banking. thereafter u have a lot of options just spend the effort to read the scb threads to learn more

I think he meant put $200k to get priority banking status so you there is no min comm charge for equities trading and can start investing in equities or etf bonds.

exactly. no minimum comm for both sg n foreign shares is a big advantage. someone has confirmed in another thread that there are no fees for depositing usd into the usd high account. there are also other options. even if u dont like it doesnt mean others wont find it useful

Thank you. I'm not a troll.

I'll be frank. I don't have the money in cash - It's in shares.

Over the past few years, like other listed MNCs, I was able to purchase company shares internally at a discount.

Things were looking up for the company in the past few years and thinking about the volatility of the market... whether I should just get rid of a significant bit, get cash and invest elsewhere.

This is the first thread I've posted in Money Mind because I thought I could get genuine advice or opinions

I am sorry if I offended you because I don't keep up with what is covered here in this forum. If I have $1,000,000 I would ask as it is, but I don't have so much.

I am not trolling or anything. Just lost. If I am, I would be asking in EDMW. Which I did actually (faster response, though I was prepared most would be trolls).

I was not sure of the keywords to search in the forums and thought to ask it directly. Before this, I have been thoroughly confused by the many local money blogs and my mind is saturated and confused now.

Sorry if I'm ignorant of the repetitive issue here. If you wish me to shut up I shall refrain from further questions.

You have my sincerest apologies.
