iMac Warranty

Hi,

I'm about to purchase an IMAC from a local seller. The seller claimed it is a BNIB unit and reason for selling is that he got it as a gift and he doesn't need it. He has provided the serial number of the unit and i used the link below to check on the warranty.

I got the following message.

Please validate your product's purchase date.
Apple is unable to provide information about your service coverage. Please sign in with your Apple ID and provide your product's date of purchase so that we can display your coverage information.

The system recognised that it is an IMAC (27-inch, Late 2013) model using the serial number i got from the seller.

Does it mean that the set is genuine and the warranty service coverage is unknown as it is not registered yet? If yes, that would be good news right?

To register the product after purchase, what information do i need? The seller said that he doesn't have the receipt and his friend (who bought him the IMAC) doesn't have the receipt anymore too. Do i need the receipt for the warranty registration?

Yes, it's a genuine product that has not been registered before.

In order to register the imac, you need to put in the date of purchase and this is the date where the seller's friend brought the imac for him/her.

Apple have set a date range for an expected DOP which I believe is 30 days range, for example - 1st Sep 2014 to 30th Sept 2014.

You will only need the receipt if you try to register the date of purchase out of that range as per Apple's record.

You can try calling in to AppleCare and inform them that you got the iMac as part of a gift and there's no way for you to produce a receipt, they should be able to register the date of purchase to the date you bought from the seller.

However if they rejected the request and needed more paperwork which you cannot produce, you can use the online registration submission and do trial n error starting from the current date and just keep deducting a day off until it accepted the date.

Once registered, you no longer need a receipt and Apple will register that date as the actual Date of Purchase and you can even buy AppleCare Protection Plan and add 2 more years warranty to it.

Not really. Ideally, u shd set up the imac first n once everything is set up, warranty will auto register.

But doubt this can happen so next best thing is only do COD n ask seller to let u open set to inspect physical condition n serial.

I will be collecting the unit at seller's house. Payment will only be done after inspection and powering up the unit to verify hardware configuration if possible as I'm not sure it will go through a lengthy setup process before I can check the IMAC info. If not, I will just verify the serial number is what he has provided earlier.

This is false info, the registration in setup assistant does not register a mac's warranty. Warranty registration can only be done once @ https://selfsolve.apple.com/agreementWarrantyDynamic.do

Once the user have submitted a valid Date of purchase, this cannot be changed and the warranty begins for 12 months from that date or if a user purchased AppleCare Protection Plan for the iMac, needs to be registered separately @ AppleCare Agreement - Register - Apple Support.

Did it accepted the Date of purchase?

If not, follow the instructions on submitting the receipt to Apple so that they can help you with registration.
