How good are they for office work, light gaming and video editing? Any throttling? The current i5 processors seems to be in a good balance between performance and battery life. Not sure if Core M is inching closer towards battery instead.

Is it as bad as C2D? Intel's marketing comparison shows it's better than i5 from late 2013, so I presume it should be on par with 2014 version of i5? More or less.

Real usage should be around Core i5 first gen performance...
But definitely much better than Core 2 duo.

C2D speeds are much higher than you think.
They are more than sufficient for standard office work, light gaming and basic video/image editing.

Bottom line is that Core M processors are regarded as budget now and so the laptop configurations tend to specify only 2 or 4 GB RAM. You want better response up the RAM, at least 8 GB. You'll see a significant difference. I'm using the ASUS UX-305 so the the Core M plus only 4 FB RAM. No lag, mostly almost instant response. Lags comes when the app or file you're opening is very large. There more RAM will be better, especially for photo and video editing.

I might skip the current Core M and wait for the next generation. Looks like it's going to be more powerful with teh same energy savings as well.

I suppose that would take another two years or so... can check up Intel's road map. Intel has no rival in the market at the moment for these types of low power, fanless processors... Qualcomm has had significant heat problems with their recent processors which ramped power. MediaTek does not look like muscling into this segment soon. AMD has concentrated on budget processors and can't compete... so I guess your stuck with Core M and at the mercy of Intel's road map. I would say give the Core M a go... you may be quite satisfied with it if you don't game... I really have had no issues with processing power...

Yes, that would be true. I don't game but I like programs and big files open in a snappy way.

I haven't tried cos I don't usually watch 4K video... it's pretty niche at the moment except for test videos or concept videos. I am not aware of the availability of free 4K content on YouTube... I last checked start of this year just to experience what 4K may look like on my 1440p monitor...

Well they do open snappily... comparable to my desktop running a Core i5 with 16GB RAM and a Samsung EVO850 SSD... Chrome, MS Office are mainly what I use... PDF files also open quickly.
