Thanks for your reply … the rest of iPhone doesn’t seem to have this focus issue …
Are you referring to focusing problem on close up objects, or normal distance like 1-2 meters away?

I seldom use the camera function in WhatsApp.

However, after reading your post, I just tested it on my IP15 PM with ios 17.1.1.

My WhatsApp is also under latest version.

No such issues.

The camera can focus and is very sharp.

Any noticeable improvement with iOS 17.1.1?

Not sure, all along my 14PM and 15PM cannot focus if the objects are too near in whatsapp.

Then its the same problem that affects all 3rd party apps that uses the iPhone 14 PM and IP15PM camera for close up shots.

The apps seems to only able to call the main camera with longer focal length and cannot use the 5x lens for close up shots.

If you do a similar test with other apps like Microsoft Lens or Adobe scan for scanning close up objects like a business card, or other apps that scans a QR code, you get the same problem.

The iOS camera app obviously don’t suffer from such problems.

Tq for your explanation on that, maybe I did not state clearly on how close up it should be. Maybe about half the arm length of distance to the objects for focus .

It’s usually 3rd party app problem, yes WhatsApp is big app and shamefully not using apple’s updated api to access camera for macro lens. You try on first party apple’s own messages. It will work properly. Try telegram app this app works properly. So from this I blame WhatsApp and any 3rd party app being lazy since ip14 launch and still didn’t fix it until now

I’m just discovered something interesting. I had thought that all 3rd party apps would have this problem of not properly using the macro lens on the 14P/PM and 15P/PM phones but one 3rd party that does this correctly is Carousell.

I was replying to an enquiry on a small item I had listed and used the Carousell app’s camera to take a close up pic, and the pic turned out to be very clear. The same small object when extended out by about an arm’s length, can still be focused clearly by the Carousell app and even zooming in on the objects’s details from that arm’s length distance was working fine.
