Total darkness should work. It worked for mine. I only got angle issue

A little fun thing i noticed: in a near-complete dark setting, you can sorta see the IR sensor turning red. It’s very subtle but after the phone unlocks, it goes back to normal.

That’s because infrared is at a lower light spectrum than visible light. You cannot see it when visible light is present as it will mask away the presence of infrared. Of cos, cannot see doesn’t mean cannot work.

Otherwise, shine a camera on the sensor and it will show up as bright red spots as camera sensor does sense infrared as well..

My frustration is when FaceID fails at initial scan on lock screen, the message previews don’t come out. How?

A point which many Face ID bashers conveniently forget to mention.

I think we may not experience it a lot here in Singapore - but many people in colder climate now in winter would appreciate FaceID a lot over TouchID when they are wearing Capacitive gloves.

Pressing power button not efficient, need two fingers
If the phone on the table, need to pick up to press power button

I do experience this during my joggings or reservist. I will put my phone in a protector pouch (the one in emarts). Face ID is way more useful in such situations.

just swipe up halfway n down. it will rescan again.

Oh! Doing this works, the messages come out but for WhatsApp, force touching on lock screen to quick reply sometimes doesn’t bring up the keyboard... argh

stock keyboard? probably a bug.

One of the best tips I've read and tried. I set up Face ID again with the phone held nearer my waist level - and it read all my different facial expressions off the bat.

"When you first set up Face ID on your iPhone X, you probably held the phone up at eye level, which is how we’ve seen it done in Apple’s demos. Instead, you should set it up with your iPhone held well below eye level, closer to where it’ll be when you unlock it. That’s right, it’s time to forget everything you know about taking a good selfie and wear that double chin like a badge of honor."

A tip would be swipe up first, don't wait for the lock icon. It will be faster that way instead of waiting

Face ID is superior than Touch ID in many cases, except Apple Pay (and Mobile ABT Transit link)
Using Touch ID, I simply put my finger on the home button and bring the phone to the terminal. It will automatically launch Wallet app and authenticated the payment.

Using Face ID, I heard we need to double click power button, authenticate it, before bring it to the terminal. If true like this, then it sucks. I wish they can implement in-display fingerprint sensor for scenario such as this.

Yes I agree the FaceID for payment has more steps than Touch ID. That's why nowadays I just use Apple Watch for Apple Pay....

After using iPhone Xs for half a day, I can safely say that FaceID has improved a LOT. It's faster now, and also seem to work when the phone is closer to the face, compared to iphone X.

This is how FaceID should have been when launched.

I wonder if it is due to iOS 12 or hardware improvements cos it is faster on my iPhone X too
