Don't need $3 per month. Just sign the yearly package.

Once it goes up, it'll hardly come down.

And stuff always goes up.

When 100gb is not enough, what then?

If you absolutely have to access your files on the go, why not spend the money upfront and get a NAS plus some hard drives? You can host your own file server and access from anywhere what. Plus, you'd have terabytes of storage.

You'd breakeven with the subscription over time. Plus your data is in your sole and direct possession and authority.

Imagine you have 1TB(=1000GB) of files and you subscribe, you'd be paying $30/mth, $360/yr. Your NAS build would've breakeven in 1-2 years, and you'd have storage to spare.

No.
Why would you need to access photos from anywhere?
You can keep on your low priced 16 TB hard drive.
One more thing.
Please be clear about this.
There is no such thing as CLOUD. It merely is another computer located somewhere else.
Cloud is cloud. Everyone knows what it is and understand what TS is trying to achieve.

Check how much office 365 is offering for family, then share by number of people. Each person will get 1TB of cloud storage.

What are the chances of getting own computer/server/home network being compromised of security vs cloud's security? Also the physical/location aspects which is safer, eg fire hazard? Don't just point out the pros, but also present the cons, so as to let him make well informed decisions.

selfhost a NAS.

it is a PITA to transfer all of the photo out when you want to migrate them away from google cloud.
the takeout service is patchy last time.

might as well move away once and for all.

did it during cover and never looked back.
else, dont know how long I would be struck with the subscription service.
