Hi, i am not a gamer, but an audiophile. I am looking at GA-Z170X-Gaming G1 because of the following features. Is it overkill http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=5478#ov

1.Next Generation 40 Gb/s Thunderbolt™ 3
2.Intel® USB 3.1
3.Connecting the Future - USB Type-C™
4.GIGABYTE USB DAC-UP Most important
5.HDMI 2.0 for 4K/60P/21:9/HDCP 2.2 Support
6.Fast Intel® 750 Series 2.5" SSD Support via M.2 to U.2 Add-in-Card (not sure if it works for my 500 series, guess it does not.)
7.GC-USB3.1 BAY
GIGABYTE USB3.1 5.25" Front Bay Expansion Port

I think you are better off getting a better sound card rather than the onboard sound. No matter how good it is, its not gonna match up with a proper sound card.

Probably the only thing that is interesting to me is HDMI 2.0, but support for it is not common currently. Same goes for USB 3.1 and type C. In fact, USB 3.0 is only starting to get affordable and more widespread after so many years.

The sound on this board is actually better than some soundcards.

It is this that capture me,
GIGABYTE USB DAC-UP

so i can run external dac and will not have the hiss from normal usb outlet. Dont wish to get audioquest jitterbug, to many accessory.

The cables from external DAC to speakers are equally as important as the USB connection to external DAC. No point spending so much to get 'clean' audio signal from PC to DAC but allow EMI interference when transmitting to speakers.

The Gigabyte USB DAC-Up and MSI USB Audio Power are more of trying to stabilise the USB port voltage to 5V. This does not guarantee EMI-free signal, hence it is not some magic feature that u must have in the system when looking for motherboards.

very interesting, always wondered if onboard sound can be better then a proper soundcard. I'm currently using a simple xonar dx. quite happy with what I get.

I feel if we just look at the specs, it might seem that way. However, the interference from the mobo may not be good for clean audio. I might be wrong since I am no audiophile.
