I’m currently a student who recently went through a work-study diploma. I want to share my experience not to complain or point fingers but to raise awareness and hopefully encourage more support for students in the future.
During my placement, I was assigned to a department where I didn’t feel welcomed. On my first day, I was told off for not mentioning that I was a student, even though I didn’t know that was expected of me as HR should have told them. After that, I felt I was treated differently given high expectation and judged more strictly in training than others.
For example other people which are not in the programme 50% while me over 100% with the higher ups watching me
When I tried to raise my concerns, it felt like I wasn’t being heard. I did make mistakes of my attitude for being to eager, and I took responsibility and apologised to improve my work performance and attitude. But instead of being given a fair chance to improve, I felt like I was being watched more closely and held to higher expectations. It added a lot of pressure.
There were also comments suggesting that maybe this diploma wasn’t right for me, or that there were “many other options out there.” It made me question whether I was truly welcome in the workplace as if the department does not want to handle ite students.
If the department unwillgy accept us they will use any method to get rid of us, more harsh training, higher standard, then they have a reason to kick us out like they treat our education like a joke
In the end, I wasn’t able to continue with the programme. It was very disappointing, as I had been working hard and really wanted to get my diploma What saddens me most is that it felt like students from my background just trying to get a diploma get treated like this.
I understand that companies have their own challenges, but if students are accepted into a department, we hope not to be treatead likea punching bag for venting just because they paid our school fees
If you say about unfair treatment, the manager has the power to terminate you and remove you from the ite programme thus losing your chance of getting a diploma.
If a department doesn't want ite students they should tell upfront during the interview, then i would have apply another department and all of this can be avoided.
Lucky I don't need to pay any penalties for leaving the course if not I will hate ite and the company even more.
I’ve since chosen to pursue a part-time diploma elsewhere as I am not applying to WSDIP ever again because its better to depend on yourself
ITE cannot do anything for you, they can send an email but the management will just t ignore it
IN THE END POLY IS 10X BETTER THAN ITE
