The 2021 Indian legal drama film Jai Bhim has received a warm reaction on Chinese social media and its review platforms as Chinese netizens drew a connection between the story of the film and a reallife murder trial concerning a Chinese woman murdered in Japan.

The film directed by T. J. Gnanavel and starring Suriya and Lijomol Jose with Manikandan and Rajisha Vijayan is also based on a true case that took place in 1993.

The story focuses on Sengeni and Rajakannu, a couple from the Irular tribe. Rajakannu is arrested by police and later goes missing from the police station. Sengeni seeks the help of an advocate, Chandru, to seek justice for her husband. Chandru files a habeas corpus case that he continues to appeal to find further truth.

India's caste system is also shown in the movie and the reflection on the system has gotten compliments from Chinese netizens.

The film has an 8.7/10 on Chinese major media review platform Douban from nearly 20,000 reviews.

Tamil film starring Suriya ‘Jai Bhim’ after being in the buzz for its convincing storyline and gripping narrative is now impressing critics around the world as it surpasses classic hit Hollywood film ‘The Shawshank Redemption’ on IMDb ratings.

Films glorifying police violence, with the hero playing a law officer and crusader for justice, have often turned into blockbusters. Suriya himself has starred in quite a few of these. But what does police violence look like in real life? How does a system that invests inordinate power in law enforcement function in a country with deep inequities?

TJ Gnanavel’s Jai Bhim, based on real events, is among the few films that have delved into this frightening, bleak realm (Vetrimaaran’s Visaranai and Mari Selvaraj’s Karnan are two others that immediately come to mind). Set in 1995, Jai Bhim revolves around the arrest of three Irular (a Scheduled Tribe) men in a theft case. The police, under pressure to solve pending cases, foist false cases on people from marginalised sections, knowing very well that they do not have the connections or money power to save themselves from the justice system

TJ Gnanavel came up with a movie of this scale and what prompted him to make a movie rather than showcase it as a documentary of former advocate and Madras High Court Judge K Chandru who fought for the downtrodden bringing about a change at the administrative and judicial level. The film is inspired by the true incident that happened way back in 1993.
