Haha, thanks for the heads up. Rakuten only offers maximum 1000yen coupons.

40k quite hard to reach unless you drive for quite a number of days or opt for a bigger or luxury car.

Nevertheless, its useful to me as I am looking to book a car for a few days. I can probably use the 1500yen discount coupon.

I assume you have booked through Jalan.net(Japanese version) before? How was the experience? I am looking to book Nissan Rental through this portal.

I have booked using Rakuten JP & Jalan.net.

Both very good sites and have good Cust Svc. Despite being Japanese websites, my email inquiries in English were replied promptly, and helpful ... not cookie cutter type of responses.

That said, they are agents, separate from rental companies. So still important to select a "reputable" rental company in the end.

Nissan shld be fine (do check if Nissan has email address for inquiries. Honda does not have & I had to call them for clarification). Times Car is also very good.

PS .... my 7k discount was from Rakuten, no min, booked in Mar for May trip. Book first, can cancel & rebook later if better deals come up, no penalty. Usually have deals 3mths, 2mths in advance, Seasonal deals etc

Thanks for ur prompt reply!

Booking using this coupon will certainly bring the cost down. Just found that I qualify for the 2000yen coupon lol. It is definitely cheaper than Tocoo, but without the NOC insurance that tocoo's TAS comes with.

I read somewhere that the car rental company themselves may offer NOC coverage for additonal cost when you pick up the car(I think that was what happened when I picked up my car in Naha, but my memory is fuzzy on that detail.)

Nissan, Nippon and Toyota are the only shops close to the train station where I intend to pick up my car. Nissan has the best offers currently. I only hope they know in advance that I am a foreigner and I will be using a International driving licence.

Have you tried booking hotels or Ryokans using Jalan? As in only on Japanese listings. I have booked before but only on places with listings on both the English and Japanese versions.

ToCoo website is easy to navigate & comprehensive. I find it more expensive though, especially with the per-day ETC card rental vs others per rental charges.

yep, NOC insurance is available at the rental companies ... usually its Y1080 per day for standard car. Advisable to get, since Travel Insurance car rental excess dont cover this.

Yes, I have used both Jalan & Rakuten JP for ryokan bookings. Same positive experience, no problems. they usually have more room options & availability then ENG sites AND (drum roll), there are discount coupons as well for hotels hahaha !

Yeah, the charges do add up, that's why I am looking at other alternatives.

Some have said that if your own travel insurance do provide rental car excess cover, can consider not signing up for cdw by the rental company. If worst case, usually not enough if u buy an average travel insurance plan where the average cover is around 1000sgd, when the damage compensation can reach 150000yen. I am still thinking about whether to take up the cdw since my travel insurance covers up to 1000sgd.

As for the NOC cover or support plan for Nissan rental, the answer is found near the bottom of this page. 540yen or 324yen per day if you take up their NAS as well. Not too bad a price haha.

Reason I asked is I chanced upon a Japanese listing on Jalan where they wrote in english that those who do not know Japanese 'cannot use this'. So I am not too sure how welcoming they are of foreigners in general. Plus tried to call some to inquire in english but got a short reply in Japanese and hung up. Kinda shakes my confidence, u know? Haha.

Haha, I can't seem to find any discount coupons that suits me tho

540 NOC fee per day is a good rate.
I was charged 1080 by Times Car for a Mazda2 last year ... ouch
Also being charged 1080 by Honda for a 7-seater, which is fair.
I took CDW as well, for peace of mind & bcos of the discount. when i returned the car, the employee just took a quick look & all done.

if u add on extras, maybe u can utilise the 5k discount

Try emailing them your questions, instead of calling. I got surprisingly decent replies in English from a traditional ryokan in Abashiri.

Is that a referral code behind that link? :s22:

no referral code.

first, u need to sign up Jalan.net as a member, FOC

then click on the coupon which will be saved into your account, then u can use that coupon to offset rental car booking upon checking out

u can click & save more than 1 coupon, but limited numbers based on whoever applies it to booking first

Haha, probably that just how Times charges for NOC cover. I think that true about the hassle free return if u are insured to the hilt, they just do a short look around the car, from my experience.

Even with add-ons, still won't reach 40k haha, unless I drive for another few days.

Some of the ryokans do not have email addresses, just tel and fax numbers. But good idea, I should email them(who have email addresses) instead, probably get a better chance at getting a decent reply.

Thanks for ur tips so far, appreciate it!

I booked my Nissan windroad from TooCoo for 09-Jul 9AM to 14-Jul 6pm for 30700 yen with child seat, and 免責補償.

Should I go for Times' Premacy or similar one for about 40000 yen (already minus the 5000 coupon) with the same booking condition?

Or from Sky's Wish , stream , MPV, ard 41000 yen including child seat and 免責補償, after coupon.

We have 4 adults, and one toddler.

I only used Times Car Rental and Toyota before. No experience with Sky Rental.

Windroad is Wagon.

In Singapore, we use Mazda 6 for 4 adults and 1 toddler (with car seat), no complaints from the back row at all.

The Premacy, Wish, and Steam are quite small in my opinion. If we want to use the 3rd road, we may not be able to accommodate our luggages and stroller.

Hey guys, I am going to rent car again in Japan. This time is for 5 adults with little luggage, what type of cars should I go for? Will a 1500-1600cc car(like Corolla or Impreza) be enough? Any advice is much appreciated!

My last trip, we were 4 adults with 1 luggage each + hand carry.

We booked the Honda Freed (its a mini 7seater with foldable seats behind). Very spacious for pax & luggage. Driver seat also comfortable - ideal for long distance travelling, I dont feel cramped or have backacches. Only thing lacking is power ...

can consider if got good deal

if long distance can consider a MPV coz will definitely be more comfortable.

latest trip 3 person we had a Nissan Serena and the space was awesome. (we booked a Nissan Note and got a free upgrade)

but a 2.0l engine for such a big car with 4WD is kind of lacking in power :s13:

I am going to drive around the Fuji five lakes, not really long distance? And we will be bringing minimal luggage as the bulk will be in Tokyo.

Jalan and Rakuten have limited MPV options at the moment for the outlets I am interested in , maybe I will check back later when the date is closer. That's also why I am wondering if a non-MPV car is enough

In my last trip, I rented a Honda fit (new model) from Nippon car rental. Their office is just beside the Kawaguchiko train station, very convenient.
