hello all, first time going to japan and navigating the train system, suppose i have to go from Ito to Kyoto, and I buy a ticket from the JR Ito ticket office with unreserved seats for the shinkansen, is the ticket valid for any combination of connections? during a change of train, can I exit the station to get food and then come back in?

I ask because some of the connections are rather tight, e.g. 3 mins, 5 mins etc, want to pee or get something to eat also cannot ....

There are toilets onboard Shinkansen, as well as on most Ltd Exp trains, and long distance regular trains too.

If you need more time at Atami station to purchase food to eat onboard your Shinkansen journey, then just take an earlier Ito to Atami train, this will give you more time at Atami.

There should be stalls selling Ekibens (bentos) and food within the station, even within the Shinkansen sections of the station without you having to exit the station.
