Yes, that's the correct protocol to adopt when overseas these days (i.e. friendly smile + polite english).Thats why, when lao auntie me, goes to other countries, I will speak English niah... and I will speak it softly and ends with "Thank You" and be polite. And always smile.
Works like a charm for me too when at countries where they are somehow hated by service people - e.g. bkk and japan.
