I just installed ubuntu... what are the recommended softwares to download?
I have installed steam, VLC player, GIMP and skype

I am running it on a desktop... but i have been using ubuntu for about 3 months now.. and its really a great O.S ... using google docs as a a replacement for word and excel tho.... but everything else is great!...

I also feel that the internet is faster on this O.S compared to windows.. or maybe I am wrong.

Uninstall Ubuntu and go install Lubuntu or Linux Mint.

Google Chrome
VlcPlayer
QBitorrent
Steam
Wine
VMware Player.
Then Climb Bukit Timah for Win8.1 & MS Office install as VMware to run your software that won't run on WINE.

Most important is install CaptureBate and let it run 24/7 for your daily entertainment.

I have installed LinuxMint Cinnamon 17.2. But I couldnt install CaptureBate.. can paste a link on download and install? Google prompts up membership to install, blah blah blah... which is not relevant.

If you have a licensed copy of Microsoft Office lying around, you can try running it under WINE, without putting up with Google Docs or OpenOffice/LibreOffice.

Hi with the silly tactics Windoze is employing i am seriously thinking of linux or at the very least giving it a more serious go before considering moving away from Windoze! My problem is i have multiple USB + PCI TV Tuners i use 24/7 to view/record stuff and an old Brother laser printer - is it hard to install drivers and make them work in linux? I dun care what distro as long as they work but i have an eye on Ubuntu and Linux Mint i guess? Kodi could be frontend so TV Headend backend for all the tuners am i right? Also is it possible to run Android apps on Linux currently?

You can google for "linux wine performance difference". Several articles and YouTube videos showing game benchmarking. Recent feedbacks and benchmarking seem to indicate little to nil notable difference.

However, if you're gaming and your games use DirectX 10 or 11, compatibility may be a hit or miss. But this is not a speed difference issue.

Try in Live CD/DVD mode without installing. See if your hardware can be detected automatically first. Sometimes generic drivers may work out of the box.

Go stick with Windows lah and let ms spy you until song song.
Linux you have to Google and diy trouble shoot all issues yourself.

Really depends on your need... For office WPS Office is not bad, feel that it is better than Libreoffice even though I don't use either of them extensively.

maybe you can try to install zram-config, it is similar feature to os x and windows 10 compressed memory feature.

sudo apt-get zram-config
