I just use the tiniest bit of bleach. Ran for 2-3 months and no problems. No noticeable difference from using just distilled water.

I've went to a local fish shop and bought an anti-algae solution called "Algae Stop-90".

Actually just pour some radiator coolant will do...

Hm.... no idea though but should be ok.

Why I recommend radiator coolant is because its anti-corrosion and helps to lubricate the pump bearings. And its cheap. Don't need ready mix, just get concentrate and add distilled water
