Hi
I was thinking about visiting Koyasan by walking up their cable car station to Daimon. Anyone done that? The map here says its a 55min walk, every time I see this kind of estimate, I have a feeling i need to multiply it by 2. I intend to walk till the tourist office then take a bus back to the cable car station. Feasible for an old man ? :)

I always think their estimate is usually spot on. Unless you plan on taking a snack break. I have read reports online, seems like the trail is quite boring. The original koyasan pilgrimage trail starting from kudoyama station is much more interesting and worth the 7 hours or so trekking it.

kifo bro, thanks, hearing from a trekking pro sure wont go wrong :s13:

That Cable Car Station to Daimon stretch is very boring? Boring as in not scenic? How about the trail? flat one or steep like hell? I scared my old knee cannot take it.

I'll give the traditional famous 7hrs pilgrimage trail a pass... :o

I saw a few youtube videos on the trail.

These 2 vids by angmos seemed to be very boring

But this fudouzaka route taken by the local japanese seemed to be different. The poster talks about a restored fudouzaka route.

The Fudozaka trail leads to the Nyonindo and not the Daimon.

A simple writeup here with photos (Japanese)

You can walk to Daimon from Nyonindo. Just that you will be walking through Koyasan to reach Daimon. Visitors who came up by cable car typically will go pass the Kongobuji Temple and the Garan area before reaching the Daimon. If your intention was to enter koyasan through Daimon like pilgrims in the past, the fudozaka route is probably the wrong trail. :)

Oh no, I don't intend to do the fudozaka trail, too long and steep. I just want to do this Koya station to Daimon, then Daimon to the rest of Garan vicinity. An anti clockwise route than the usual Koya station, Nyunindo's clock wise route. My way do able?

Yes you can walk in the opposite direction of Koyasan from the Koyasan Station along the road. It is about 40 mins walking on the road and it goes through 2 tunnels, so please take care as there are buses on this route.

You can see where this route joins Highway 480 on Google Map here:

Why don't just take a bus from Koyasan station to Daimon instead? Probably about 200 yen or so and save the time?
