Laptop for business use

Hi Bros, Can recommend a laptop for business uses?

Director looking for 1 and the previous lenovo thinkpad we got for him have problems less then a year after purchase.

The issue has been dragging on till director blacklist the brand.

Mainly running homebrew programs and the usual office applications...

Prefer to be light and have SSD as they travel frequently.

I would highly recommend the dell vostro 5460/5560, just released. Thin and light but i believe it's preinstalled with normal hdd, but u can swap it with a ssd.

Try Toshiba Portege Z series. Light weight and with SSD. Bit expensive though, but worth

since the laptop will be carried around and overseas frequently.
There is one important factor to consider for Business laptops:

WARRANTY

Ensure the warranty is international. Duration... look at 3 years. Nowadays, not many business laptop brands are giving International warranty. Most are local warranties.

Go through terms and conditions of the warranty. you wanna ensure that if the company is unable to fix a bugging issue with the laptop, they will replace it...

Otherwise, go with Apple MB or MBP + APP (Apple Protection Plan). The high price your boss is paying is actually for the after-sales servicing and technical support.
I remembered there was a fan issue with one of my ex-company's MBP 15" and after 5-6 times unsuccessful attempts to fix the issue by Apple, they finally decided on a 1-for-1 exchange based on the latest MBP 15" model equivalent to the one I am exchanging.

I did consider MB,MBP before...

But as my directors are not really that tech savy, they may go bonkers trying to use it...

and installing windows on mac where the mac part might not be used at all is abit

There had been issues before where previously they do not want to adapt to win 7 and stick to XP all the way till now.

therefore on the safe side, I will go with windows machines for now, till they are willing to adapt to mac.

many businesses always look at PRICING... SPECS... but always overlook the warranty, only when the lappie break down then you realized you overlook it...

You don't wanna be caught in a situation whereby your laptop broke down when you're on overseas business trip and the service centers in that country refuse to repair, even if you pay them a lot of money... simply because the warranty is only valid in Singapore....

There are some things money can't buy... and this is one of them...

yeah... that's the main reasons why people use Windows lappie, because so many software, hardware, firmwares and equipment are compatible with Windows. and plus, your usage is very basic.

Yea, Toshiba Portege Series laptops comes with 3 year International Warranty. The ones we have in office have the same. But need to go to their redemption center and redeem from there. Battery 1 year only.

Lenovo 2 years ago had. Now not sure

a separate warranty on battery is a rarity these days... even one year is good enough.
Seriously I missed the IBM thinkpad days...

got 1 new one as my director likes the previous T60s....

haven hit 1 year anniversary metal parts all rusted...

e6430 is heavy. go for e6230, 1.4kg only

I'm using the older e6220, battery life around 6hr
If you choose dell, go for the 4hr support, they'll replace whatever parts that's spoilt on the spot (even when in your hotel room)

Now a day warranty is very subjective. Unless you are travelling to overseas and stay there for a month or longer. If you are going for a short trip, it is unlikely that the service centre is somewhere near where your are staying.

This means you cannot get your laptop repaired in time for your work. You ended up has to bring back for repair.

if I travel around a lot for business trips, at least having an international warranty gives me peace at mind if things go wrong with my laptop...

If the issue is too serious and cannot be fixed on the spot, then I just have to LL suck thumb and think of other ways to overcome the matter.

A business laptop is more than just its specs. It also making your IT department life easier to manage so many laptop with so many specs with so many different drivers etc.

A good business laptop should have a long life cycle. Doesn't mean it last longer but if you buy in January 2013 and by January 2014, you should still be able to get the same laptop with the same specs. Hard disk size, CPU speed, Memory can all be different but motherboard with its VGA, Chipset etc should all remain the same.

Consumer laptop on the other hand are always changing. Today they will put ATi XYZ GPU, in the next few months, they may change to some ATi XXY.

So focus on life cycle.
