Hi,
Am looking at laptop with primary function to photo editing (photoshop) or video too; and occasionally program coding.

Was wondering if there's any recommendation?
Looking at below 1.5k

So far, I listed a few:-
Dell G3 15 ($1399)
ASUS FX 503 ($1398)

Or should I just go for U-series processor with MX150 discrete graphics?

well since u are doing photo editing, going with u series and mx150 gpu will definitely slow down quite a fair bit den normal no u series.

Thanks for the comments.

I did think so too. Given the cost significantly lower than those non U-series, i believe the performance would be affected when processing image.

Which is why I thought of going with the lower gaming specs laptop.
Dell's G3 15 is i5-8300H vs Asus FX503 is i7-7700HQ.
The rest pretty similar; other than storage.

Bite the bullet and go for Asus FX504GD instead for $1357. 1.3k for a hexacore laptop considered nice for me already. Usual priced: $1598.

Dell's G3 15 (i5) on the other hand, so far sold out on most booth. Best price I got is $1298.

does photo editing use gpu power? Used to do video editing back in the day and it was all about the cpu and ram.

Agree U series are not for intensive work as well as to pair with MX150.
Owned one lately regret that I have to change.

I'm using a 10 year old machine with GIMP for image editing.

Don't see any reason a U-series processor can't get the job done.

U series can get the job done but pair it with SSD.

It can the job done using GIMP. It's the speed Im concerning. Since Im using lightroom so batch processing is my main preference. Previously using my old 2nd gen i7 with HDD, processing time is really killing me.

If you are willing to increase your budget a bit, why not go for a workstation which are meant for design work like p50 or zbook g3.

A Quadro Graphics is must to have for design work like Autocad and Photoshop. (https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/design-visualization/industries/manufacturing/)

A quad core processor HQ would help you to do multiple processes at a time like i7-6700Hq, i7-7700hq or higher should be more than sufficient.

16Gb/32gb ram for multiple processes too.

Just searched up a few workstations and these few posts looks quite decent

I wish too. Budget constraint is still my primary limitation :s13:
