Hi my bro is enrollig into a multimedia programming course in NYP. The course manager recommended to have a laptop with discrete graphic card and 8GM ram.

The school offers Asus UX331P. But the price vs the specs like not value for money as compared to the new UX331UN although poly verison includes 3 yrs onsite warranty at 1,820$.

Pls kindly advise which one should i take. Thanks

Get the higher price.
At least it's consider lightweight for carry all time.
Somemore has GPU for player lighter games.

If can please avoid for Asus brand.
I don't think it's reliable for heavy usage.
To compare from MacBook Pro 13 or Lenovo ideapad 720s, Dell, Hp envy 13 or Acer Swift 5.

Care to explain why Asus brand is not reliable in that sense?

There's a reason why corporations & Governments buy Lenovo Thinkpads, HP Probooks/Elitebooks and Dell Latitudes instead of Asus Zenbooks, Lenovo Ideapads and HP Spectres/Envy.

Word of fairness, business / enterprise grade laptops are twice as expensive for the same specifications/ laptop

There are businesses which use the lesser known Asus Pro (business / enterprise ) series of laptops

Personally for me, I would recommend a gaming laptop rather than an Ultrabook at your price point. A small form factor Zenbook series laptop is great, however over time, you will notice performance drop due to factors such as thermal throttling.

In a multimedia programming course, files I predict will be large. Hence, 1TB HDD or more of storage is preferred. Of course ideally it is good to have an SSD and HDD combo

There are attractive offerings from Aftershock, MSI, Gigabyte at your range.

It's just that AsusPro line up isn't as established nor widely adopted as the big 3's enterprise lineup, plus the level of service/turnaround times are kinda unknown. Finding common faults or end user anomalies online would be much easier for the big 3 than with AsusPro.

Spec for spec, definitely double or sometimes triple that of the cheapest consumer laptop. But sku for sku, I don't think isn't that far from a premium-level consumer laptop (e.g. XPS 9370 to Latitude 7390).

Which is why I like to recommend refurbished/2nd hand business grade laptops as resale value for all Windows laptops drop once they aren't brand new. But then again, most people aren't comfortable with 2nd hand or think these older gen laptops are ugly/thick/bulky.

About TS's options, I definitely agree staying away from that particular Zenbook. The i7 and MX150 is just gonna thermal throttle in that form factor.

Definitely a refurbished / used EliteBook.
Specifically those 8570W quadro work stations
