Hi, I'm starting school in August at SMU IS and was thinking of picking up a laptop. My main look out points is i7, 16GB RAM and 500GB SSD and maybe screen size too (Which screen size good for coding and stuff?). Any recommendations? What kind of laptop you guys are using?

Any opinions on these:
Asus UX430UN
Asus UX331UN
Razer Blade Stealth
Aftershock P-13 Helix

Aftershock seems the most compelling since the specs and price is super competitive.

You don't need an i7. Most in IS are using 13" and 14" laptops. 16GB ram is nice to have if you tab a lot. Even if you are budget constraint, 256GB is more than sufficient. Look beyond just your typical specs. For example, that P13 doesn't look like it's gonna have great battery life with just 36Wh.

I use a Dell Latitude because I can (and had) arrange ProSupport onsite service come to a specific building on the arranged date.

You won't be coding perpetually. In fact most of the time when you think you'll do so and so in uni will almost always be false. Even coding at uni level doesn't require high end processors and the difference isn't much with 8th gen u processors between i5 and i7.

Get a light weight laptop (13-14", 1-1.4kg)with good battery life, 16gb ram and 512gb ssd. Bringing around a tanky laptop is not practical in terms of weight and it's strange to whip out your monster laptop in a lecture hall with tiny built in tables

This.

Getting a lower end thinkpad would do you good justice. X270, T470 is not a bad choice.

Just got a Lenovo Thinkpad T480s with your mentioned specs. Pretty solid and lightweight laptop. I'd recommend it.

During my Uni time, i used back the laptop that i got for my Poly.
4GB ram and 2nd gen i5 processor.
Still good enough to get the job done.
The only few software i need are Microsoft office and Google.

You don't need blazing fast high capacity SSD, tons of ram, i7 or mobile graphic card for school work unless your work requires you to do ALOT of video editing, rendering, photoshop, etc. (Once in a while also doesn't justify the need to buy one)
Else all are waste of money.
