The LG V60 and G9 ThinQ might be different versions of the same phone

The LG G8X ThinQ and LG V50S ThinQ 5G launched late last year as different versions of the same phone. Now, with the company reportedly developing the LG G9 ThinQ and LG V60 ThinQ, a new leak suggests the strategy could soon be replicated.

5G and 4G LTE versions of the same phone

Just days after CAD-based renders of the LG G9 ThinQ emerged online, several glass panels belonging to the LG V60 ThinQ have leaked out. These reveal a few details about the upcoming smartphone, including the fact it may be released in three colors – black, blue, and white.

LG has already confirmed that all future V-branded phones will support 5G as standard, meaning the V60 ThinQ will do too. But if today’s glass panels are the real deal, it appears the company is planning to put less emphasis on emphasis on the compatibility by ditching the light-up 5G logo that graced the LG V50 ThinQ.

Leaked LG V60 ThinQ rear panels

Other changes include the removal of the rear-mounted fingerprint scanner and a noticeably wider camera setup which suggests LG is planning to add more sensors to the phone. Interestingly, these last two details line up perfectly with the recently leaked LG G9 ThinQ.

This means there’s a good chance the LG V60 ThinQ and LG G9 ThinQ are being developed as 5G and 4G LTE versions of the same phone. If true, the former will probably arrive powered by the Snapdragon 865 whereas the latter may have to settle for the Snapdragon 855 or a Snapdragon 700-series chipset.

Lots of cameras, huge display, and a headphone jack

Everything about these phones aside from the internal configuration should be identical. Therefore, if the previously leaked LG G9 ThinQ renders are accurate, consumers can expect to find a 6.8-inch OLED display up front coupled with the company’s flavor of Android 10.

The panel itself looks set to incorporate an in-screen fingerprint scanner similar to the one used on the LG G8X ThinQ and V50S ThinQ. It should also be paired with a small notch, decently sized bezels, and an aluminum frame.

Other external features include a dedicated Google Assistant button, a bottom-firing speaker, and a headphone jack. The latter means LG remains as one of the very few smartphone brands committed to the legacy port.

Completing the overall package will be an updated quadruple-camera setup that should give LG the opportunity to better compete with Samsung and Huawei. It’s expected to house an upgraded main camera that’s paired with the usual ultra-wide-angle shooter.

Also rumored is a telephoto camera instead of the more advanced periscope alternatives and a dedicated Time-of-Flight sensor for improved AR content representation and more accurate background blur with portrait shots.

LG V60 ThinQ and G9 ThinQ announcement, release date, price

The LG V60 ThinQ and LG G9 ThinQ are currently expected to make their debut at MWC 2020 in late February. Pricing and availability information should be announced alongside the phones, but it’s unclear when sales and pre-orders will start.

Last year, the G8 ThinQ didn’t hit shelves until early April while customers hoping the purchase the V50 ThinQ 5G had to wait until late May. There shouldn’t be any delay for LG’s 5G flagship this year, but a release before April for either phone does seem unlikely considering the company’s history.

As for pricing, expect LG to position the G9 ThinQ as an iPhone 11 competitor. The V60 ThinQ, on the other hand, should compete more directly with the Galaxy S20 Ultra and Huawei P40 Pro.

LG could launch another dual-screen flagship phone at MWC 2020

Looks like LG will launch another dual-screen smartphone at MWC 2020. The news comes from Korea Herald which reports that LG will launch the V60 ThinQ at this year’s Mobile World Congress. The yearly mobile technology event happens in Barcelona and is scheduled start on February 24, 2020.

Quoting industry sources, the Korea Herald writes that the LG V60 ThinQ will be a 5G-enabled smartphone. It will be accompanied by a secondary display just like last year’s LG G8X ThinQ. However, this time around, the company will reportedly redesign the hinge mechanism that attaches the second display.

Currently, the hinge on the LG G8X ThinQ moves 180-degrees, allowing the second screen to wrap all the way around. However, it separates the two displays by close to an inch, which does not make for a seamless viewing experience. Maybe LG wants to fix that. Although, where there’s a hinge, there’s bound to be some amount of visual interruption between the two displays. Unless, LG plans to use some software trickery to get rid of it.

Why not make a true foldable phone?

Looks like LG is not yet banking on a true foldable phone like the Galaxy Fold, Huawei Mate X or the resurrected Moto Razr. Maybe the company is just holding out until it has a solid device to offer.

On the other hand, patents filed by LG have suggested that it’s thinking on the lines of a phone with a fold-out display and one with a rollable screen. LG Display is also in the market this year for supplying foldable OLEDs for smartphones, tablets, and laptops. So maybe the company is taking foldables seriously, but probably wants to test out its second-screen concept for a little longer.

We don’t have any other details about the upcoming LG V60 ThinQ, but hopefully we’ll know more closer to MWC 2020.

V60 not coming to Singapore? :(

https://www.techradar.com/sg/news/the-lg-v60-will-reportedly-launch-only-in-the-us-and-europe

The LG V60 will reportedly launch only in the US and Europe

By David Lumb a day ago

Sticking to areas where consumers will pay for flagships

LG’s next flagship phone, the 5G-capable LG V60, is only headed for two markets - the US and Europe - according to an LG executive. Meanwhile, other regions will get 5G phones in lower price tiers.

LG is shifting its strategy to only release its new top-end phone in areas with consumers that will pay higher prices for handsets and where carriers have more aggressive marketing, LG Mobile Communications Business lead Shin Jae-suk said in an earnings call, reported by TheElec.

LG will release a more affordable 5G phone in its home region of Korea, Shin said in the call. This could be referring to the upcoming LG G9 in the more budget flagship G-series tier - or perhaps something even more mid-range.

The LG V60 will certainly come to carriers, like other 5G phones

Hopefully more features will make the LG V60 reach our best phones list

The LG V40 was the first triple-camera phone, perhaps its successor will make our best camera phones list

Splitting 5G phones between different 5G markets

Aiming different phones at territories they’re more suited for isn’t a new strategy, but it’s further complicated by the nascent 5G markets. The next-gen networks are still being built, and will work on different frequency bands once they go online.

Consumers are unclear about 5G, but excited for higher speeds, and this is where LG has decided to plant its flag by releasing the 5G-capable LG V50 ThinQ 5G in mid-2019 as a minimal iteration on the V40 that felt rushed out to be one of the first phones out there that could work on the advanced networks - or at least Verizon’s in the US.

While the phone didn’t quite achieve the performance or download speeds as the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G, the LG V50 was notably cheaper, with the launch price of a new iPhone XS or Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus. But the LG V50 wasn't as widely available, only coming to Verizon 5G and Sprint 5G in the US.

Conceivably, the LG V60 will follow in these footsteps, offering the marginal advancements and perhaps a new trick or two - LG’s signature - at a price below other 5G flagships. But as those prices are still beyond what other markets will pay (especially those flooded with more affordable Chinese phone brands), it makes sense to send a cheaper 5G-capable phone there.

Depending on its price, a cheaper flagship 5G like the V60 could make our best Android phones list

I find not bad leh. The V50 was actually quite a nice phone overall, with V60 it seems like they're just doing more modest upgrades and trying to keep the price a bit lower than the competition?

The camera bump doesn't look as clean as V50's flushed back, but it's probably going to be easier to protect it from scratches too. Screen wise hopefully quality is better too, especially QC. I don't really miss telephoto since most of them are quite meh, but hoping at least they improve or maintain the Ultra wide angle camera quality. The v50 ultra wide is one of the best last year. Also hoping the main camera is better.

From the hands on video i only see "Night View" mode which if it's the same as V50.. it's not going to be great. haha. then LG's quad dac always a nice feature to have. Let's see if they will bring it into SG officially. Not that Huawei is not that viable anymore, it's nice to have more options.

the will not accept. i had a korea SK v10.
it had the famous bootloop issue, so i brought down to LG at Labrador to see if they can service for me of course at a fee.

they rejected after knowing its non local. even when i say that i will pay for parts and labour.

so, you are out of luck with an export set

My V30 is still on Android 8, they don't update software so no point buying LG anymore...very disappointing after sales care!

If the V60 has a better refresh rate then it would be a top phone. LG make the best TV's, can't they make the best mobile screens!?

Overall V60 is quite a solid package but the bump in form factor is a deal breaker for me so am less inclined to upgrade from my V50 :( Would've been great if they kept the 6.4 inch display like V50/V50s and improve the bezel gap on the dual display case. My only gripe is that there seems to be no way to disable the camera shutter sound on my KR set.

LG indeed a dying breed here, which is a shame. So the only viable way is to import from resellers, warranty claim can be tricky but is not too bad if you get from a good seller (i actually sent back my v50 once for repair without fuss from a korean qoo10 seller)

Korean V30 updated 9/Pie already.

Maybe try LG Bridge to check your phone has any update. Assuming local set?
