I see much discussion on how to make money, passive income, investments etc. But not much on concrete ways to spend less and still enjoy ourselves. Just how to live well on relatively little money. Any secrets or lobangs to share? Preferably not just vague info. Thanks so much. 😀

Let me recall some recent places. Not always delicious 🤣🤣:
1. Harry’s often has 1 for 1 or 50%. 2 pax just main course, less than $40.
2. Food for thot at national museum. Fish n chips $18++. Rice bowls maybe $15++?
3. Canton paradise or Paradise dynasty have teatime special on weekdays. 2 pax can eat for less than $40.
4. Paradise group currently have $40 off for $100 voucher. For members. Anyone can join for free. Can feed 4 pax.
5. I have actually just come back from simple lunch at Jumbo Seafood Ion. 3pax, 3 dishes. About $86. Less than $30 per pax.
6. Last week I was also at jumbo ion. 2 pax for about $230. But we had chilli crab. So no choice. Sometimes more than $100 per pax. 🤣
7. Tonkatsu ENbiton. Many Sets from $15-25++. Free flow rice and cabbage salad.
8. Ivin’s at Bukit Timah. Acceptable Peranakan style food. 3pax less than $40.
8. Gayatri’s for Indian food. Both veg and non-veg. $20 per pax is enough.
9. yes. Need to go for the 1-for-1 promo if we want our money to stretch. My definition of restos is quite loose. Cafes included. Jumbo also got nice birthday vouchers which I shared about before. Also can use eatigo, the entertainer, and last time Amex card etc.
Something like what I shared in another thread about resto/cafe meals I can get for $20 per pax. 😀

I’ll share another concrete lobang. Go be a Jumbo Rewards member. It’s $20 but you get back $20 in Jumbo dollars. U will get birthday vouchers. The best is $100 for $200 spend. I’ve actually used it for 4pax at Jumbo seafood Ion. We even managed to order a small chilli crab. So, after discount, we paid about $120 for 4. About $30 per pax. But you need to order carefully. 😀

Another good idea if you like KitKat is to get it from Valuedollar shops. U can get Made in UK KitKat for about $2.95 for 9 two-finger bars. 186.3g. Sometimes can get for $2.50. They have some other quality things. And lots of basic stuff. Instant coffee and shower gel come to mind. Quite fun. Go pay them a visit. Sure u can find something u will like. And at a better price. But it can be a squeezey place to shop. 😀

The root cause is about being content with what you have? This one is really dependent on oneself.

I prefer to spurge in JB

spent minimal in SG
JB also can share. Some JB places got Singapore pricing. Lousy. Others good and honest.

Now that u mention JB, I like to go to Peking Restaurant. Their Peking duck not so nice. But their Signature tofu very nice. Is it RM3 per piece?

Agree with that. Morgan Housell's Psychology of Money makes the important point that all you need is 'enough'.

Those in IT know that the recurring expenses/maintenance costs are the killer (if you are the client - if you are the vendor they are your cash cow).

Occasional one-off charges are manageable - for example visiting Machu Pichu (or other bucket list tourist destination) once if that is something you are interested in seeing. Maybe have a notional 'bucket' into which you save money until you have enough to go on the trip.

Finally, like I mentioned before, your 'wealth' is not just 'money but linked to your economic capital, social capital, and cultural capital. If you have built up social (& cultural) capital, there are plenty of activities open to you that are often no cost - for example, being invited to parties/dinners/social events.

Even dinners where you go Dutch and pay your share, the fact that you are joining a group (usually someone knows the owner/boss), the dining experience is more 'exclusive' - eg, private dining room, the boss and chef come and chit-chat with you etc. (though I usually lose out because I don't know how to enjoy expensive wine, but I'm always happy to be with good company 😅 )

Yes. That’s so true. Having a “connection” is fantastic. And that really is a good idea. But only certain types of people can have these connections. I have a friend whose husband is in “venture” capital firm. So go holiday often got special upgrades. Even got wine and wine by govt minister. But I don’t have those connections. And don’t know how to get them. But certainly a good idea if can get. 😀

Yes. Recurring expenses are a killer. So good secrets will be how to keep these to an absolute minimum. Like when I renew my HP contract, I never sign up for those extras. I think there’s some Disney channel or TV/movie thing. They give u some months free as an incentive. But I usually forget to unsubscribe. 😀

Careful with lobangs, especially those shared from internet, random msg/email. U may end up losing more than u wish to save.
Yes. True. We must all be careful about the lobangs shared. But mine all genuine. Unless I say I never try before. 😀

It seems yr social circle u are currently enjoying is predominantly within yr friends/ex and present colleagues.
So u may want to work for as long as u can OR retire together with them.

I can tell u one thing for sure....if u retire earlier than them, u will get less and less such invitations.
