Looking for advice on upgrading old computer

Is not say not compatible but the CPU won't catch up.
Especially the fact RTX 3060 is a PCIE 4.0 graphic card with resizeable bar feature.
Since the motherboard doesn't support PCE4.0 and resizeable bar thus it won't tap on RTX 3060 full potential.
So a GTX 1070/1080 will be more suitable.

As for BIOS update which I have done many times even for spoilt motherboard.
What others are cautioning is risk of bricking the motherboard.

BIOS update improve system stability, RAM compatibility, Intel security updates etc.
Many users don't update the BIOS unless there is a need.

However for older motherboard example Intel 4th Gen, need to update BIOS to support newer Windows 10.

If you don't want to do BIOS flash is OK but rest assured you won't brick it.
Unless you somehow turn the PC off during the updating than the motherboard will be brick.

BIOS chips can be corrupted, regardless of whether you switch if off half way or not while flashing.

Almost anything can corrupt electronic devices. There can be a power surge, malware, aging, wear and tear of the device. BIOS is just a device that store bits on a chip. A slight imperfection on the chip, a flip or alteration of the bit, a malfunction will occur. One may even corrupt BIOS deliberately or inadvertently by entering the program and mishandling it.​

Forum is not just about “opinion” sharing. People learn from facts and knowledge (experience) sharing too.

I am generally aware that I'll need to upgrade my ram and GPU, but as my MOBO / set up is very old, I'm hoping to get some more specific advice to avoid compatbility issues (I'm quite a noob and have no idea how to check this).

I see ur spec is quite decent enuff. Most probably nid to clear away those unwanted files in ur windows 10.
Too bad ur m/b can't support NVMe SSD. Get a normal SSD 1TB to backup ur HDD. And install all the games on SSD. That shld be running smoother. For GPU, ur budget can't get a RTX. Maybe go for AMD instead. RAM upgrade to 16GB will do.

In that case, I'll be upgrading my ram to 16gb + looking for a second hand GTX 1080. This seems to bring me within the $250 range (approximately), which is great since it's below my budget.

Beware of GTX 1080 mining card too..... And make sure ur PSU able to support the power.
