I had the 6 core i5 for a while to test. Works great with Final Cut Pro and Adobe Lightroom classic. Render times are slower for FCP due to a lack of a dedicated GPU, but otherwise works very well.

me the reason to upgrade ! :D

I tried it at the Apple store. Was exporting some imovie and the mac mini ran quite hot. Not sure if this is ok in the long term.

Better in what terms? if you need more video processing and heavy games, u still need external GPU. But light home usage with photo editing, MM 2018 is okay. Im using the basic setup and it works fine for me. Lightroom, web and office tasks.

general use, day to day usage.
I have 2014 i5 8GB and is ok, but when running VM, it will get slow as ram is 8GB. Thinking of getting 2018 16GB i3

Got the mac mini 2018 to replace my ageing iMac of 2012. It is the i5 6-core, 256GB SSD model from Lazada. Does run bit warm but it is still a 6 core machine in that little enclosure. Use it for daily minor stuff like web browsing, Netflix etc. So far it runs very quickly, just that the BT keyboard (Apple) doesn't seem to connect too quickly after the machine boots up.

As for the previous mac mini, my opinion after using is it is slow, partially due to the HDD but even the upgraded one with an SSD, it can hardly run FHD video in my area of work, where the lag is very apparent when there is a transition of a visually complicated video.

I went from Mac Mini 2009 (upgraded to SSD) to 2018.

A lot improvements (USB 3 and USB C support, 4K, etc) and speed increase.

Now can watch FHD videos or YouTube without lags.

My 2018 mini is an i3 with 128GB SSD. Enough for my web, email, excel and sometimes graphical (silhouette studio) app, pairing with a 31.5" Prism X315 Pro.

All other data on my USB C external 4Bay device (all mechanical) with Time Machine backup.

It's quite warm after running awhile.

Got the i7 6 cores model. Pair up with Vega 64. Super solid machine. Doesn’t get too warm in air con room

Has always wanted to get a Mac Mini and the i7 model looks tempting. Probably wait till the price drop a lil before swopping for it.
