Not too long ago, I bought a 15' rMPB and have been enjoying it ever since. My only regret is that I could only afford 256gb ssd at that point in time, due to budget constraint. As such, I am considering moving media-related files to a seperate storage, so that I can reserve the space on my rMPB for progs/apps.

Currently, I am on M1 20mbps fibre connected to ASUS n56, using wireless for my rMPB.

The following things are what I would hope to achieve out of the created home network:
1. A NAS for me to store my media files, that can be accessed through wireless anywhere at home.
2. Also able to access the NAS from outside network (eg. while I'm at girlfriend's house)

Would like some advice on what's the most economical or efficient way to achieve this. I have read about using Time Capsule in client mode, but the performance seems compromised. I have also heard of turning a mac mini into a NAS. How about other alternatives?

Seems like the recommendations are quite unanimous. I've done some looking around and saw that there is a DS213air which comes with wireless.

Question is, do I really need the 'air' model to be able to access it wirelessly, or the standard model will do, once it is connected to my home network? Also, what's the price like on these?

Towkay, what kind of help are you looking at? I mean, you can download the manual of the said synology model and have a look at it. That's what i do for the basic stuff anyway.

It is very simple. Plug it in, format the disks and synology will prompt you along the way.

I also use macs at home too.

Yep, what blimey said.

I purchased my Synology a couple of months ago and it's relatively easy. My biggest issues right now are proper setting up of accounts for users and how to access the NAS from outside the flat.

Precisely what i meant, setup for home use should be as easy as following on screen prompt. How to setup for access from outside the house is what i don't get or understand......
