My wife has a mid 2009 MBP which is unable to charge when its connected to the charger. However, when I connect the charger to my MBA using a Magsafe 2 adapter, it is able to charge my MBA.

I checked the system information when the power is connected and it indicates its not charging nor is the light on the charger orange. The battery cycle is less than 300 because my wife hardly uses it.

I've tried cleaning the contacts, removing tand reinstalling he battery, still doesn't work.

Any idea if its the battery or the logic board kaput? How can I isolate if its battery or logic board problem?

Thanks :)

Try resetting the SMC: Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

Since you isolated the issue and the power adaptor works on another mac and SMC reset did not fix the issue, it's high likely that you might have a faulty HW part.

Does the adaptor light up at all? amber or green or no light at all?

if there's light, it might be just a faulty battery but if no light indicator it's probably a faulty logic board.

If it's still able to switch on despite not charging, try running the Apple Hardware Test to confirm if the HW fault -
support.apple.com/kb/ht1509

Looks like it's out of warranty by now, having the Logic Board replaced might just cost a bomb.

Thanks for your reply. The problem is indeed hw. Its the DC magsafe connector which is faulty. Looks like contact problem.

Someone online had this problem and replacing it cost < $100. Now that its working after pushing around the contacts, I will just use it for another year. Anyway, my wife hardly use it....
