Using my POSB MasterCard debit at a DBS ATM yesterday I was invited to join TransitLink pilot to tap into public transport using bank card. The pilot is sweetened by rebate of first 3 journeys.

Just received SMS confirming registration with more details here:

Pilot not started yet.

London public transport already allows tap in using credit card so this should be good for locals and especially tourists. Less queues at ticket machines!

wow. so is this tapping into PayPass technology? the equivalent of PayWave?
From what i read, it doesn't seem to be the usual ez-link chipset anymore!

Which means, it will come to ApplePay and Android Pay soon!!

wait a minute, how does it work when your POSB Debit Card is already an ez-link as well? Wouldn't MasterCard and Ez-link clash at the faregate if both are present?

In London it works with all contactless payment methods - maybe MasterCard have signed an exclusive deal (hopefully time limited) with TransitLink here?

As for dual use cards that is an interesting question. Maybe registration for the trial blocks the ezlink purse at the fare gates? I wasn't using it on that card anyway.

MasterCard uses PayPass.
VISA uses PayWave.

MasterPass is the online shopping feature, while PayPass/PayWave is contactless payment.

rather interesting move, but apart from convenience there's not much benefits. there's not really a contactless mastercard which offers a whole lot of points/cashback, my best guess is one of the cashback cards (manhattan/optimum etc). even if it was launched for visa, trips will rarely qualify for 4mpd on uob ppv as the amount will almost never be above $5. perhaps dbs altitude for 1.2mpd, which can already be achieved by topping up ez-link with it.

If i use the master card pay pass for this purpose, my posb everyday card only gives me 0.3% rebate. Think my safra dbs card also 0.5% at most. I dont have anz optimum but even if i did, also 1% only.

Might as well use citi smrt card's ez-reload for 5% or uob delight's flashpay auto top up for 3%.

just some clarification that this is different from ezlink/atu.
every txn will be a txn charged to ur credit/debit card, no ezlink/flashpay card needed.

anz optimum is 0% (due to round down)
citi smrt is not 2%
boc is not 5%

What happens when your MasterCard also has EZ-Link function?
According to the FAQ, if you sign up then TransitLink (public buses and trains) will use the MasterCard contactless part of your combo card, not the EZ-Link part. You can still use your card's EZ-Link wallet if you wish at merchants that accept EZ-Link payments. For example, you can tap in/out of the MRT using MasterCard contactless and then hop into a taxi and pay with EZ-Link (in taxis that accept it), all from the same dual card.
