I have a phone with Mediatek chip, and I use public Wi-Fi hotspots a lot.

I find that I always get 1 bar weak connection, unstable connection that trend to break every 5 or 10 minutes, and slow reconnection to the wireless router/access point, either a very long authentication, or getting an IP address assigned.

Is this a common problem experienced by Mediatek phones? If it is, I will look for a Qualcomm Snapdragon one for my next phone/tablet.

Sometimes it could also be bad phone antenna design, bad shielding, weak/no amplifiers on antenna as well. Lower end phones wouldn't invest much R&D on design.

Thats the known fact. Never get a phone with MTK chip unless price is a concern.

My phone is Lenovo A606 using the Mediatek MT6582M chipset. And just to add the GPS sux as well. It can't seem to lock on and determine the location. need patience like 5 to 10 minutes to get a reading.
MTK GPS is weaker than SD that's typical. But for minutes, that's too long. My RMN4 MTK took less than 30 seconds to lock in when outdoors.

The WiFi though, kind of expected from Lenovo. Their products are nothing but sh*t, especially the phones.

I've heard nothing good about the handsets other than being cheap, but I would rather pay a bit more for Xiaomi devices, at least it works better, much better in fact.
