Any recommendation for a mini or small PC that can output 4k video to a 4k TV?

There are MSI Cubi or Intel NUCs you can hoot from Amazon... $200 should get you a very capable system.

But don't ever get anything that comes with Intel Braswell... They sucked big...

First I tried a HEVC encoded 4K video (3840×2160, 29.97 fps, 80 Mbps), which is scaled down to 1920×1080 on my screen (which increases the load even a little bit more), as I don’t have a 4K screen at my disposal. According to Intel 3840×2160 at 30 fps is also the maximum resolution and frame rate that the device can support. As expected, NUC5PPYH manages this just fine – CPU load constantly under 10% and playback is smooth.

I don't think I want to spend a lot but will need 4k@60Hz in order for smooth video. I see most of the desktop's HDMI port can only output 4k@30Hz, unless you have a Display Port (DP) output.

Found this very slim & small Intel Core i3 desktop with DP port (although discontinued, it's available at some stores). Do you all think it's possible to do DP to HDMI 2.0 conversion to get 4k@60Hz to the 4k TV?

Go for a skylake or newer processor. They decode 4k smoother.

Sounds like a overkill to me. The intel nuc6i5sy must be cheaper. Also consider other options from msi etc that uses i5 with the iris pro graphics. You can add the dp to hdmi 2.0 converter.

You will need a discrete gpu only if you are using the older cpus.

I don't think the NUC is exactly cheap, especially after you add in the RAM, SSD and Windows. I think I will get eg. a desktop with a decent graphics card with two HDMI 2.0 ports to connect to my 4K TV and also a desk monitor. Can still play VR games and warranty covered for 3 years.

Skylake or newer as mentioned with a HDMI 2.0 port. At least a i5-6500 to view HEVC at 60FPS 4K. Like on youtube.

That would look ugly in your console. If you are thinking big it is time to start self building. Go for node202 itx case. Get a second hand itx motherboard cpu ram combo from the numerous options available in the it garage sales. Get a 512mb ssd, a silverstone sff psu, and a gtx 1050ti and you are done. Your cpu motherboard ram combo can be older gen too since all of the 4k capabilities will be handled by gpu. This is best value for money, will look extremely good,and has future upgradability path.

can i ask why u said Braswell sucks? what about comparing it to bay trail?

cos i thought of getting a bay trail for internet surfing and Full hd video streaming
