Mobile plan contract ending, need advice

Yo folks, my phone contract is at 20th month and I'm looking at either renewing or jump to other telcos. I barely scratch 4GB of data and 100 mins of talk time a month.

I'm with Starhub for donkey years but is it still good to stay with them (they giving me $100 phone voucher)? I see so much competition these days that I'm facing an information overload .

If you don't really care about the phone subsidies, most of the No-SIM plans will be of better value.

First question you have to ask yourself is do you need a phone now? If you need a phone, you can continue with starhub taking the phone vouchers.

Otherwise, the trend now is getting no-contract SIM only plan. Your plan is much cheaper with better value. Nowadays you can easily get 30GB data with abundant sms and outgoing call minutes. Starhub do have sim-only promo

nowadays, SIM only no-contract price is even cheaper than after CIS discount.

For me, I don't think sign line and sell phone really make some profit. Yes, you made a profit for selling the phone, but you are paying higher monthly bills, this will tie you for 2-years.

Oh wow, RedOne is pretty interesting, even the $18 is cheaper than Starhub's $25 SIM only plan but I don't see CallerID as a VAS, only CallerID Non-Display.

How about other mobile virtual network operators (MVNO)?

It seems that people like me with low data usage (less than 3GB) is just paying more for nothing with the big 3.

However, the MVNOs seems to have inferior/unstable coverage is that right?

I am using the SingTel combo 2 plan with only 2GB quota. I need about 3GB so I used the free 1GB Circles.Life as the bridge. Recently they have offer or Data*3 for S$5.90 (24 month contract) so I paid for it to have 6GB data. I decided to keep this line to enjoy annual handset upgrade for SingTel Circle members as I have family members who likes Apple iPhone. I feel that iPhone subsidy is higher than other phones. The idea is to get iPhone and a midrange Android phone alternatively.

I have another Singtel Combo 2 line for my wife which I will convert to SIM only plan (most likely SingTel SIM only or Gomo) after the contract fully expires in December. She also needs about 3GB data so she is using the free 1GB 3G data bundled by SingTel Fibre. We actually got S$100 voucher and free 6GB data upgrade from SingTel to recontract in September (21 months), which I think is a very good deal, but I decided to give that a pass in the end. That was the first time I got a voucher from Singtel but the difference between S$47.9 (S$42.9+S$5) and S$20 (Gomo) is pretty big. Okay I got 15% discount since I have two lines but that is still above S$40.

On the other hand when your plan have more data you will be able to find ways to use it.

In Singapore that is true.

The major difference seems to be different roaming arrangements. But I do not care for roaming myself. I seldom travel. I can still use a Starhub prepaid card for data roaming when needed. And I have a China Mobile Sim card for my yearly trip to China.

Based on my personal experience, cell coverage is more or less the same.

However, I do realize that the speed on MVNO is not as good as MNO. I suspect that MNO are prioritising the speed to their own customers from before MVNO.

Also, MVNO does not have access to VoLTE/WiFi calling, etc.

BTW, you mentioned that you are paying S$105 for Starhub, then you have big discount for top phones. So you may need to consider the lost of that benefits. If that is not a problem, why not stick to Starhub and just convert to Starhub SIM only plan? Especially now they have the promotion to make it S$20 per month.
