I switched my Philips 234EL from the laptop's external display to the desktop's display, both using the hdmi connection.

whenever I powered on the desktop, the monitor always stayed dark, except for the check signal cable box floating around. it stayed this way for 30-40 seconds, then the monitor finally displayed an image at the windows 7 welcome screen. when I powered off the desktop, the monitor went dark and displayed the floating around check signal cable box. it stayed this way until I switched off the electric socket.

I tried the dvi connection, and things are ok. the hdmi cable is tightly secured to the ports. it is brand new. I assume it is in good working condition. there are no images issues with the hdmi and dvi connections. things were ok previously with using the monitor hdmi connection for the laptop.

what is the problem here ? thanks.

I faced the same problem when using the newly bought samsung monitor.
Problem solved after I changed the source from auto-detect to manual and select hdmi..may be you can try it on your new monitor...

HDMI is not a good choice when it comes to computers.
I had a hard time connecting my desktop & laptop to the TV using HDMI.
Sometimes can connect, sometimes need to reboot server times.
No problem when using the standard VGA.

Samsung monitors have this scanning for input signal when connecting machine is boot or shutdown before it goes to on or standby mode. Set input to manual and select your connection accordingly to get rid of this scanning!
