For example, to read research papers or textbooks learning.

Used to have a 22" Viewsonic at 1680x1050, but viewing 2 page pdf seems a bit lacking because the A4 page gets cut off.

I am thinking of getting a larger monitor, but will the 24" be too small? Then how about resolution? Is 1080p sufficient or should I go 1440p?

I read tons of research papers using Dell U2415 16:10 ratio 1920x1200 resolution. Previously using 1680x1050 which is also 16:10 ratio.

U2415 can display perfect 1:1 2 x A4 size without scrolling up/down and left/right.

I do lots of comparative views with at least 2 docs open side by side.

You have a few options

1. Get a 24" rotated to portrait, This fill 1x page nicely
Use this in conjunction with your main monitor.

Get a 27" / 29". This will fit 2x pages side by side nicely without the need to scroll down

16:9 ratio 1080p unable to display 2 x A4 full size, you need 1920x1200 16:10 ratio.

Depends on how good is your eyesight, for middle age man like me with presbyopia, a 30" with 2560x1600 works perfectly.

If table space allow, get a min 42" TV. I use as my main monitor, can load 2 A4 fit in the screen with readable fonts. Not only pdf, doc, whatever can load more pages.
