I'm consider getting a monitor for my new surface pro 3. It's either Dell UP2414Q a 4k display, U2413 Brilliant color , or UP2414H slim design

But big time noob in screen resolution, from what i understand ...pro 3 resolution runs at 2160 x 1440 , and i'm considering Dell UP2414 which is a 4k display that runs at Ultra HD 3840 x 2160 .

Dell UltraSharp 24 Ultra HD Monitor - UP2414Q

I assume that surface pro 3 is not capable to run at 3840 X 2160, even if it's doable, i guess all the icon and text screen will be so many thats is barely readable , right ?

Would getting Dell U2413 be a better option since it run max at 1920 x 1200 at 60 Hz ? But at the same time i'm worry about getting blurry or not sharp enough.

Dell UltraSharp 24 Monitor (Dell UltraSharp U2413 24

Lastly, U2314 Color Support:
Color Depth: 1.074 billion colors
Color Gamut (typical): Adobe RGB 99%, sRGB 100% and 120% (CIE 1976)4

Is it kind of a overkill using U2314 with 1.074 Billion Colors....

Yes, i'm hobbyist using Fuji X-T1 Camera 16.3 megapixel. If my camera can't display that much color different...i'm considering getting Dell UltraSharp 24 Monitor – U2414H which is more slim and cheaper.

Dell UltraSharp 24" Monitor

Some advice would be greatly appreciated.

I think it's clear you don't understand the purpose of both monitors and it would be an overkill if you don't understand its purpose.

Dell S2340L or S2440L is more than enough.

surface pro 3 screen resolution is 3:2 right? does it mean we must get a similar aspect ratio monitor to ensure there's no issue when toggling between monitor and device screen?

Not really. There isnt any monitor u can find that the ratio is 3 by 2.
U can go for a full HD which is 16:9. Wont be much of a issue...

Actually youtube already can play up to 4k content already... Jus that there isn't many 4k video out there...

I'm also trying to setup my surface pro 3 with dell monitor u2713hm. It is a QHD monitor. Supposedly capable of 1440p. I bought a mini DP to DP cable. I hook it up from my surface pro 3 mini DP to my dell monitor DP. It does not display anything. just goes into power saving mode. I don't know whether its my surface pro 3 or monitor or cable that is the problem. I already updated surface pro 3 drivers thru windows update (all 60 updates). Still not working. I tried downloading the latest drivers from Intel. It does not allow me to install. Says it is not compatible with the computer.

Surface Pro 3 to dell monitor via HDMI works flawlessly. However, QHD and (i'm guessing Ultra HD) does not work quite as well. My last option is to change the cable. I bought the mini dp to dp from sim lim. One of the cheap ones, white cable, costing around $24.

Anyone know where else to get the Intel Graphics options utility where you can specify custom resolution for the monitor? In my old HP laptop it has this utility and using this utility I am able to output from HP laptop to Dell monitor up to 1440p.

Personally i think that font size is never an issue for UHD screen cause its small but then its so darn sharp. If u feel that its too small, then u can use windows to upscale the font. if you really wanna try the UHD feel with your surface pro 3, bring along your surface pro 3 to Samsung Monitor booth and look for a black jacket guy. He got most of the cables you need to run 4k. Then at least you can have a look and feel of a 4k res then decide if u wanna get 4k or not.
