Monitor Problem - weird 'stain' that spreads

Does the patch move if you nudge it with your fingers? Any chance it could be water damage? Placed under leaking aircon? Not sure if monitors are the same as laptop screens, but it looks somewhat similar to this, although not 100% similar.

Looks like the liquid crystal is leaking. No way to repair unless you change the panel. But if you need to replace the panel, might as well get a new one.

Only laptop screens are worth repairing because you can using back the whole laptop.

Really appreciate all the guys who gave a technically informed answer. I'm ok with junking the monitor; i just needed to know what the problem was.

Any hardware that has problems, the easy answer is say, throw away lah. It is the knowledgeable people who will explain why it needs to be thrown.

So now I know the problem comes from leaking liquid crystal, and it is only repairable by changing the entire panel which is expensive. But is it possible for me to just put aside the monitor and maybe use it as a backup? Will the leak worsen until monitor burns up when I turn it on in future? The stain is ugly and not good for daily use, but having a stained monitor as backup is better than having no monitor to backup. As long as this problem is not dangerous, I'm happy to keep this monitor as backup.

Dell's business practices now include making products that will not last. 6 years seems to be right since they are already doing it since back then too.

Products that lasts will equate to taking a potential consumer out of the market. If that happens, then nobody needs to buy a new one and their business will suffer.

So instead of relying on innovation, they make products designed to fail after a period of time. So they can once again have your hard earned money.

Acer has been turning over a new leaf and doing different business practices. So right now, if you want a monitor that will last you a while, go with Acer.

LG, like Linus has mentioned, drops their product support way too fast in like even 1 year like their TVs. So best to avoid them if you want to risk your last updated firmware being buggy.

Samsung, their TVs seem to last even till now. Not sure about their monitors but should be good. Their LED panels are great.

True, I have been hearing more bad things about Dell and better things about Acer in recent years.

The thing I hate most about Acer is their non-VESA compliant monitors.

My last Samsung LED monitor died in 3 years.

You can put it aside to use as a backup, eg: when repairing or building a rig.
The stain is aesthetic, you cam still work around it if its justa temp monitor

If you want to bthrow it away, you can consider leaving it outside or just beside the rubbish chute but in the void deck. Someone will dispose of it.

Regarding monitors

Dell, i feel gives the best Out of the Box experience, without the need to fiddle around. I used to also use the U2311HM. It is a nice monitor but power consumption was 10w higher than competing monitors of the same size.

I would still stay away from Acer as their business model involves third rate components. Cheap but not necessarily good. The Acer Predator monitors are their premium range, but its still an Acer....

If you are into gaming, you might want to check out the Ultrawide monitors. They offer more real estate compared to regular 16:9 and LG's offerings won't break the bank.

Have the same problem with my Dell monitors. about 6 years too just after warranty ends. I opened it up and it is the film that is on the monitor have that is having this issue. Don't think there is any way to fix it.

I have been using Dell because their IPS and matt monitors are perfect for long hours at the office. I don't game and don't watch many movies, but I have to be reading text (or surfing websites with lots of text) all day.

Let's say I want a 25-30" monitor, IPS, matt, VESA compliant, capable of portrait allignment. Do you have any suggestions? So far my researches indicate Dell P2717 is the best value at $400.

I agree with tmfwy, won't touch Acer with a 10 yards pole. Not POS but not in the league of product with decent quality components IMO.

They are good during the early days with the Multitech branding, quality gone south after they changed the name to Acer, totally lost interest to look at them.

P2727H is a decent IPS panel monitor with antiglare panel and 3 USB3.0 ports which is god send feature for user like me. Currently using the U2415 for the 16:10 ratio (not a fan of 16:9 FHD), the USB ports are much needed feature for my usage.

I do game But i am a stickler for text as i do have to compare and contrast documents for long hours and nothing irks me more than a monitor not disploaying the blackis text on white background, black enough. zzz

My lowdown
Just stick to Dell / HP. They are business centric. Philips if want cheaper..
Philips is business centric but has a blue tint. All the philips monitors i've used are more blue than the other monitors.
LG is dang bright. Colours are as vibrant as samsung. but perceived as inferior to samsung,
Acer has a washed out feeling ( i used to have their G series 27 inch )
BenQ, i cannot bring myself to work on ah beng.. Seriously, i need to black tape the brand if i need to use one..
Samsung = Neutral but hate their glossy finishes
AOC, Viewsonic = Up there with Acer
Asus = Haven't tried their jmonitors [er se but the one on my ROG G750 notebook is simply gorgeous. I use it as a reference monitor when doing videography outdoors. I haven't found a panel that matches the quality of the G750 screen yet.

I still would prefer Dell coz an invoice, really looks like an invoice, without much fussing around. The U2311HM surprised mje with its text quality and i replaced it with 2x S2240 coz it offered a 10W reduction in power consumption and looked nicer.

I used the LG25UM58 as a cheap way to compare and contrast 2 docs side by side. The 21:9 aspect ratio also makes for a nice timeline view when editing. Coz when you actually think about it, 1280px is the perfect aspect ratio to display enough of a doc, hence 2560px is nice when comparing multiple docs.

PS: Dell P2717, there is someone on the graphics market place selling for $285 i think new with wty. It would be bad form of me to advertise the nick but she is the one selling the HP Elitedisplay for cheap.... ( which you may want to consider coz itz QHD and 10bit for roughly the same prie ).

My Samsung "Series 5" FHD 32 inch TV 10 years old still working (but we don't watch TV often).

My In-Laws' Samsung 4K TV bought last year, the screen had to be replaced just after one year (They watch TV everyday).

I am not sure what conclusion can I draw (of older Samsung vs newer Samsung TVs) since it's not apple-to-apple comparison in terms of intensity of usage.

You can consider the lenovo l27q-10, 27" 1440p. About mid $350 or can even go lower if you have the right coupons. Using it for a few weeks and great so far, same usage as you.

Only thing is they are new in the monitor market, but they have quite good reviews online (albeit tech and not user reviews).

TS my old u2311h also same issue as you. Can't figure out a solution for it, even opened up the whole monitor and used tissue with alcohol to wipe but stain can't be removed. Gave up and bought new monitor.
