Was about to hoot monitor during pc show but got alot of questions.

Do we really need nvidia G sync or AMD free sync to play game? If get those normal samsung or dell paired with powerful gpu like 980ti will have problem due to no sync between fast gpu and monitor?

Do we really need 144 / 120 hz monitor to game such as upcoming fallout 4?

Is it ok to buy 2k monitor to game or better wait for affortable 4k monitor to game or better to stick to 1080p for gaming. Reason for asking is that I want a big monitor like 27/28 inch but worry 1080p at this size will be too low in pixel density.

Thanks in advance expert

One way to look at it:

1. Ask yourself, what kind of setup did gamers have just a few years ago when the hardware today didn't exist? Many of them are still using the same stuff from the last 2-5 years playing the latest titles.

In fact, I doubt the average person can tell a significant difference between a ***-sync monitor and a normal one with many game titles.

2. 4k is not ready for prime-time yet. The software hasn't caught up.

No need watever sync monitor. No need 120/144hz monitor.

4k if your hardware can make it. Myself bought a 27 incher full hd monitor. Price gap between fhd and qhd is a bit too wide for my taste. A couple of years time should be less than $500 for a brand name qhd monitor with scaler.

Depends on what you really want and what is your wallet capable of.

1. 120hz and 144hz do have a slight difference if you play fast action games. And yet being a competitive player and wanna edge out the rest of your opponents then yes you will want this monitor. But however as of now, mostly is non IPS panel. Its all mainly TN panel. TN have very bad color saturation as compared to IPS. And the viewing angle is a bit bad especially when it comes to movie watching at a certain distance that is not within eye level. IPS do have 120hz monitors but it is not readily available in market. Do note that its only the gsync or freesync monitors.

2. IPS/PLS/AHVA/TN panels. This are different types of panel used. Among all, IPS PLS(samsung named), has nice color saturation and also good viewing angles of up to 178deg angle. It offers much superior views and colors over TN panels. VA panel is in between TN and IPS/PLS. VA has very good black contrast and no IPS glow. It also offers good color stauration but not really accurate as IPS. But its a good thing to have especially watching movies. Its black contrast is there. And you can differentiate all the black levels. TN panels is the worse one here. But it does have extremely fast response timing of 1ms. Its fast, but i doubt most can noticed any difference from 1ms to 8ms. Ghosting is dead on TN panel. So pick one that you really love.

3. Freesync and gsync. Depends on what you really need. Freesync requires just a DP cable version 1.2a. Its isnt like gsync that requires a build in module which cost relatively more. However research shows that gsync is able to support as low as 30fps. But it gets a little choppy for freesync. But overall if you can afford a gsync or freesync monitor, you should have the money to buy a gpu that is able to churn out more than the monitors frequency running. To run on low fps, you basically wasting the monitors potential.

4. The gpu to run a 1080p or 1440p or 4k.

The higher you go, the more horsepower needed to power those monitors. Usually if you match refreshing rate and fps together to get smoother experience. You will come to conclusion that you will need a gtx970/r9 290 to power a 1080p games. As for 1440p most likely a single 980/290x to run it well. And lastly 4k you will need a minimum 980ti or titan x. Or to churn out more will be dual 980 or dual 980ti or dual titan x.

TBH even an uncle who is at 5X knows shyt about monitors nor pc can even tell the difference of an IPS color saturation vs a TN panel. And definitely love the colors and also overall gaming experience is definitely an improvement from TN to IPS.

So conclusion is as long as pair gpu with correct monitor resolution then no need g sync or free sync? Only need sync when gpu is too fast for monitor rit?

So if gpu is 980ti then must buy 2k monitor or 4k monitor @ 60hz rit?

Yes. 980ti for 2k monitor will be just nice the sweet spot for everything.

Fast, definitely 60fps or more for most games at high ultra settings.

Running dual monitors, IPS and TN.
IPS - Dell U2312HM for anything else besides gaming (CS:GO/Dota2)
TN - VG248QE just purely games.

This does it for me ;)

Wonder have you really ever used an IPS monitor before... :s22:
Hmmm you know what? I have! :s13:

Have you played FPS games on 120hz? compare it to a 60hz then.. difference can be seen and felt

Not everyone's expectation of an awesome gaming experience is similar.

So I guess it is to each his own ya;)
