Thanks. So there must be 2 choices right? One upfront lumpsum payment and another monthly payment?
One almost always purchases a lifetime annuity using a single payment. That's the whole point, to convert some amount of money into a lifetime stream of income.

Also you get business trips, get to fly business class and visit places that you wouldnt visit with your own money.
Business class is far from universal, any non-work time at the destination is necessarily limited, and there are no free tickets for your family.

Hi Shiny Things,

Thanks for the quick reply, at 4.30 am no less, you must an early risers :D

Nah, I'm based in the USA, so it's late afternoon for me. I'm a total disaster area before my first or second cup of coffee :D

I tend to go down the value investing route and look for decent counters with good P/B ratio so far its paying off but there are only that many counters with this profile in SG.

Yeah, stockpicking has its own traps; there are absolutely people who are good at picking stocks, but I'm not one of those people, so I lean toward just sticking it in a broad market index.

Lol F*ck you money, reminds me of Billion (love that quote), I'm actually in Project management but what I specialize in is slowly eroding given the automation that's gone into the industry over the years. Competition is steep as well with the number of increasing consultancy companies staffed with very competent personnel.

There's always a need for good project managers in the tech sector, especially in the enterprise space. I can't promise it'll be less taxing - the project gurus at my company tend to work pretty hard - but it might be a nice change.

Anyway despite my urge to say screw it all I am keeping a lookout for less taxing roles. Might be challenging within the current firm since everyone seems married to their work (literally on standby on weekend/leave days).

Yikes. Yeah, it's definitely time to look for something different - you can only do that for so long. I thought 13-hour days five days a week was bad, but at least as an FX trader the market shuts on weekends and we get mandatory block leave each year.

I think the same rules of discipline, conviction and staying put, work for stock picks as well. Once you pick enough stocks, like say 20 best stocks in the entire universe, it should behave almost similar to the ETF. It is just that when you have picked the stocks, you tend to research and read about them a lot more. When you pick an index you tend to research and read about global macro trends a lot more. If you want to be completely hands off Index investing is the best. Probably safer and provides better returns too. Stocks will be more volatile and test your conviction more often than not. If you want to kill time, stock picking is the best way. It sucks time like nothing else.

Haha yeah I know where you are coming but with the current role its more like 1/2 of the day at the monitor, with regards to trips I find them quite tiring (maybe its the age :) ) But you're right though my company business is primarily within middle eastern/African countries probably not my first choice for holiday :D (My company also one kind, really got to bang table to get business class :s22:)

Yep another thought was also family perception of things, as you rightly said although it should not matter when one just hangs around home that also add some pressure.

To answer your earlier question the funds I have was from a company payout due on shares given to me. I never counted on it primarily because it wasn't expected. My actual nest I was building was investment on 2 properties (1 overseas 1 local) so this adds to it.

I'm not looking for a stop work situation (i.e retirement) but considering just taking a active investment route to replace the working income, 2M split I mentioned earlier was more example but to be frank the payout was significant hence this consideration.

Thanks for again your views, had I been on previous role I would probably be more than happy to continue doing what I was doing for a long time :s12:

There are certain perks that come with being employed; like 1/3 of you day passes by without you having to wonder what to do. Even staring at the monitor is okay, because you have no choice but to stare. Also you get business trips, get to fly business class and visit places that you wouldnt visit with your own money. I like that part of it apart from the fact that there is regular inflow into my account. Also, being employed, gives me an option to travel to other countries in future. This is something to think of. You have 2 million, but may be you want to migrate to another country and see how life is there. Australia may be? Being employed allows you to apply for PR. So these are few things that make me still go to work. Also I dont think my wife and daughter will appreciate a lot if I am at home all the time. You know, no matter what if you are at home all the time, somehow kind of lose respect and not a good example for kids.

Ah no wonder, hope you dun miss the local Kopi's that something that's gets me moving in the morning.

I find FX trading mind boggling to be honest, with regards to stock picking I used to dabble in some accounting work so reading the annual reports and company background etc seems a lot more straightforward then predicting where the ccy are going to swing. One area I am keen to know more is bonds but the market doesn't seem too active and I have no idea where to start which bonds to pick where to trade them etc.

Moving out of where I am is definitely on the table (only question is what comes next). I just need to make sure things are stable enough so my colleagues don't suffer too much more than they are right now :s13: that and the bonus if I can I should least recover some monetary compensation for the nonsense that went around :s8:
