SINGAPORE - A 22-year-old man who allegedly slashed another man and injured three police officers in Hougang is expected to be charged with voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons on April 19.

It comes after the police received calls for help on April 17 in the vicinity of blocks 676 and 677 Hougang Avenue 8, where several members of the public witnessed a naked man purportedly damaging vehicles at the open car park.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the man had allegedly damaged a parked vehicle before attacking a 30-year-old man with a knife, the police said in an April 18 statement.

The younger man then allegedly picked up a wooden plank with nails and used it to damage a stationary bus along Hougang Avenue 4.

When the police arrived at the scene, the man allegedly attacked them with the wooden plank as the officers attempted to arrest him. Three police officers suffered minor injuries as a result.

The 30-year-old man sustained injuries on his arm and was taken to a hospital.

The 22-year-old will be charged with the offence of voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons under Section 324 of the Penal Code 1871.

The offence carries an imprisonment term of up to seven years, a fine, caning, or any combination of such punishments.

A member of the public, Mr Shari Mohd, will be presented with the Public Spiritedness Award for protecting the 30-year-old man and his three-year-old son during the incident by swiftly moving them away from the alleged attacker, said the police.

“Mr Shari’s courageous intervention prevented what could have been a very dangerous and deadly situation. His selfless actions exemplify the strong community spirit that helps keep the community safe,” said Ang Mo Kio Division commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police Xie Xingmao.

The suspect was taken conscious to the hospital.
