Nas DIY or Synology?

As for os, unraid is the best option to me for a media server. It let's you mix and match different sizes of hdd to build up the library. Indexing can take some time if you replace a faulty hdd(it's based or parity). Even if you do lose a hdd, you only lose a hdd worth of media data which isn't alot.


I am not to familiar with unraid, however form what I can see they are just offering free open source solutions made into a commercial product?

It used to be free. Not anymore. They changed it in 2015. A free alternative would be SnapRaid os + MergerFS. Unraid is worth it though due to it's Auto sync parity. Snapraid combo needs a script and it needs to run manually or use a scheduler like cron.

I do not need that much storage. Maybe 2 drives at first then possibly expand it to 4+ drives in the future.

Not much of an advanced user, would like a simpler Nas os

The raspberry pi is not to be used as a "serious" Nas. It probably would not be able to run any proper file systems like raid or zfs etc.

Additionally the pi cannot power 3x usb HDD from its usb ports. You may get away with 1 but for 3 you will need a externally powered usb HDD.

A simpler solution will be to buy a 4 bay Nas. However looking at the prices ($500+) I feel it's more economical to build a pc for that purpose.

If you are set on a pi, there are many guides online just a Google search away.

If you are familiar with Linux, there are better suited sbc like the rock64 with usb3 port, gigabit LAN and a non shared usb interface unlike the pi.
in that case looks like i have to build a NAS PC. any choices for low profiles NAS enclosure that is lower than 15cm in height. else i have to get synology

If you got no depth or width restrictions a rack mount case will fit the description.

Then you really should consider unraid. A typical raid will need the same brand AND size to build. Whereas unraid/ it's free alternative little brother can share different brands and size of hdd while being scalable.

That means your can always add in new hdd in the future if you need more without rebuilding the raid.

Or, the simplest way is to simply buy synology ds918+ and hdd then forget about it. A cheaper alternative would be synology ds718+

Thanks. I think I will go for unraid. freenas seems more suitable for the enterprise.
