I got the DNS320L during the last trade show, although i liked having the NAS, i didn't really like the performance of it. Was thinking of changing to a buffalo(2bay) or if the price is right a synology 212j? so the question i have right now is, can i just pull out the HDD from the Dlink and slot into the new NAS and w/o needing it to be formatted?

Not possible as different NAS brand has it own way of setting up the filesystem (EXT2/3/4/XFS) and volumes (number of partition, size , type). Even NAS from the same vendor do not allow porting of HDD between model due to reasons mentioned earlier.

If you only have 1 HDD on the DNS-320L, you might want to get another one for the new NAS and use that to setup. After which migrate the data across neither using the normal Windows copy/paste method or connect both drive onto a desktop PC and do the transfer.

which means if i do not have a spare HDD lying around, i wont be able to transfer the files over... spent so much time transferring my data to the NAS, cant believe i have to do it all over again...

I assume you are using EXT-3 file system for 320L.

As you using RAID1? If yes, I think there is a faster way.

1. Use the one Hdd for your new NAS.
1. Attach the other to a hdd-dock / external casing.
3. Install ext2ifs driver for windows (alternatively, boot to linux)
4. Directly copy from the hdd to the new NAS.

This way you don't need to copy out, then copy back into the new NAS.
The bad part is, you lose redundancy during the migration.
If one hdd fails 1/2 way through the migration, you may lose your data.

That is the painful part that most need to go through.

TS, take note ds212j read/write speed at best 7x/4x mb/s.

Just checked the brochures, no more 212J. Replaced with 213j R:100/W:7X mbps

$294. Most likely will go for that.
