NAS Question

I currently have a Home Theatre setup consisting of an Atmos/HDR ready LG OLED with accompanying sound system.

Other devices I have are a Synology Router (Which load Media Server Software) and a proper gaming PC.

I'm at a dilemma on what to do with regards to playing media on the HT system.

What I need is:

• Place to store my media files: I do not really need 24/7 access. Only when I intend to watch movies
• Offload my gaming PC Media Storage HDDs to a shared access area - say a router attached HDD or an NAS
• Machine powerful enough to transcode HEVC

The options I seem to have are

• Attach a USB HDD to my Synology Router: But that does not allow Atmos
• Buy an nVidia Shield or other Media Streamer (Such as the Egreat A10) then attach a USB HDD to them
• Get an NAS

I'm wondering which is most cost effective and stable. A high initial investment is not an issue.

Also, assuming I go with a NAS, which HDDs should I go for?

I know to stay away from WD Reds and that Hitachis seem most reliable.

But do I go DeskStar or UltraStar?

There's tons of HDD offers at CEF so quick replies are much appreciated!

I do not see how using your Synology router as a NAS will prevent Dolby atmos from working. Playback depends on your media player compatibility.

I play it using the LG OLED but I do not get an Atmos Stream.

Is it a setting issue? PCM vs BitStream?

Does your tv support playback directly from the usb HDD? If it does you can test if it plays the atmos stream.
