Need Advice: Intel to AMD

I am currently running on Gigabyte H170 D3H MB and i5-6500 CPU.
Memory is 2 x 8G 2133MHz and GPU is Zotac 1080.

Frequently playing MMORPG, running 2 accounts concurrently, opening multiple windows in Chrome and playing Youtube at times. Some times may even open a third game to play.

Very often I find the CPU running at more than 95%, at times 100% when viewed in Task Manager. Also I encounter system prompt memory insufficient at times, asking me to shut down some application.

So if I change the system to a R7 1700/1700X, will the CPU usage percentage be better?
If I use back the same memory, will I still face memory insufficient issue?
Current using a 550W PSU, if OC with R7, is it sufficient?
Is Cryorig A80 for OC with R7?

Running a Ryzen 7 will help alleviate slowdowns when running multiple apps/ games at the same time. However, you will need to upgrade your memory as Ryzen relies on fast memory to perform well. PSU wise, it seems enough to me, depending on the other components in your rig and how hard you intend to overclock the CPU.

1. 2133 MHz is not going to reap the cores/speeds of R7 1700. Recommend at least 2666 to 3000.

2. 550W PSU is enough.

3. Cryorig A80 is enough.

4. Don't suggest getting AMD.

You have a very recent processor. H170 should be able to run Sky Lake/Kaby Lake. Buy i7-7700 or i7-6700 2nd hand while sell your i5-6500.


With the hyper-threading, you should have enough CPU power for your multi-tasking and gaming.

PSU wise, it seems enough to me, depending on the other components in your rig and how hard you intend to overclock the CPU.

Other components such as?? OC to a acceptable speed is my intention.

Other components such as how many hard drives, ODD, fans, etc. These components draw power from the PSU, so will need to factor them in.

H170 will be able to support i7 6700 and 7700. H170 does not allow for any overclocking on the K chips, but can also run them.

Based on your use case, I doubt a 4c/8t chip like a i7 6700 will help. You will definitely see more improvement with more cores and threads.

support this too! just get an i7. save you the hassle of reformattig and reinstalling. and also up your ram speed and total capacity.

Switching from i7 to Ryzen did not need any reformat... Though that was Win10

the motherboard has been changed. i thought it required to be reinstalled or a fresh clean installation? as i am aware that win 10 can install the drivers but it will be very messy.

There are many discussion on this, some say no need to reinstall/format install, some say need to. Anyone with first hand experience can comment?

im aware that win 10 can adapt to the changes but still would prefer a clean installation to prevent any conflicts if such arises.

This is correct. New rig, I prefer to start new. Save myself any trouble of things like driver conflict, etc...
