what game is that?...if your hardware used to be able to play smoothly, i see little reason why it should act up now...

defragment, clear temp files... run CCcleaner or similar programs

@dreadknight, I mostly play steam games. There's one that i've been able to play before quite smoothly with little lags, but now too laggy to even click anything after starting the game. Planetary Annihilation.

Here's the requirement for that game.

MINIMUM:
OS:Windows Vista SP2 64-bit
Processor:32 or 64-bit Dual Core or better
Memory:4 GB RAM
Memory:Integrated graphics with shared memory requires 6GB
Graphics:Shader 3.0 / OpenGL 3.2 +
Resolution:1280x720
DirectX®:9.0c
Hard Drive:2 GB HD space
Additional:These specs are still being determined.
Additional:Windows XP is NOT supported. The game will not run in XP.
Offline Mode:To automatically use a local server, we require 8GB of RAM and 4 logical CPUs. Local server requires 64-bit. There is no 32-bit server.

Open the Task Manager and see what system processes are running in the background and check amount of RAM usage.

Actually i'm more interested in upgrading my current com then trying to solve the lag. What should i be upgrading to increase my com's performance with games?

EDIT:

Physical Memory(MB)
Total 4095
Cached 1477
Avaliable 1712
Free 286

1) Buy more RAM. Get 2X 2GB sticks of DDR2-RAMs for $40+ each and add them to your current system as I believe that this lag is caused by too little RAM.

2) Buy a Leadtek GTX 750Ti for $225.

3) What PSU are you using? State brand, model number and wattage.

4) If you want to, go find a Core2Quad in the HWZ marketplace if possible.

5) To be frank, though, a completely new rig would be much more economical and much more long lasting than upgrading an already ancient rig. Can use the new rig to play your Steam games and use the old rig for web surfing/HTPC/torrent engine.
